Beautiful...autumn-like.

We had that same beautiful autumn-like day here this morning. 

Got to play the Monday mens doubles. Evenly matched; we won at 8-6 (nobody wanted to bother with tie-breaks). The set went for an hour and a half. My serve OK, no dfs. Art of the day was to return deep without hitting the ball out. Opponents found those hard to handle. Short balls were fatal with this crowd so tried to avoid sending them!    There was only time for a second set which had to be terminated at 4-2 (OK for us).

Glad to see you are out enjoying the weather AND playing some tennis.  Based on the one afternoon I spent with you, I'd say your game is quite efficient, even though you tried telling us the opposite.  You didn't have any trouble keeping the ball deep that day either.

I had a good hitting session with the instructor this morning. It happens for an hour a week and, amongst other things, he is very good at nagging me about bad habits such as finishing a ground stroke with the racquet parallel to the ground. I also try to get away with windshield wiper volleys    more than I should. Things are improving but bad habits can be lasting. I'm finding this regular session works well.

It appears I have a natural backhand slice. That's a little bit like telling me that I've been writing prose all these years. Didn't realize I had the talent. 

Have been told to watch Tommy Haas's forehand this afternoon.

It is good to hear you are getting out and stroking some balls.  And yes I'd agree that you have a natural slice on the bh.  It was a very smooth and relaxed looking shot.

I found, you back when I played, that the slice caused a lot of volley errors. I just seemed to me that when I sliced to someone at the net, they dumped the volley into the net pretty frequently.

My current (and long standing) theary is; topspin shots will cause the ball to come slightly up and forward off the volleyer's racquet, while slice (or backspin) will cause the ball to come slightly down and forward. Most people (myself included) don't leave a lot of room for error, and most passing shots come at them with topspin. They are so used to that, that when it comes at them with backspin (especially the really nasty backspin I could hit with), but they hit it as if it has topspin, it goes down into the net.

another perspective on it is that a slice shot u take with a volley, is the only shot u hit that actually has backspin.  the bounce off the slice reverses the spin on the ball, so that its spinning slightly forward after.  topspin and flat shots both come off the court with forward spin as well.

I use to dread hitting a sliced ball on my volleys, but that was more so back in high school.  Missing a slice shot now as a volley is simply inexcusable unless you are simple in a bad position that you cannot set up properly.  You just need to move into the volley, if you wait for it to come to you, it will drop straight down.
