I turned up to participate in an informal pick-up game early today. There were 5 of us so we just played games with the server taking a break after each of his games.  Still, with the weather like this, it was a pleasure just to hit a tennis ball    and a good time was had by all.

Ah yes, you are experiencing the true meaning of life.

Good news E!   I have been saying round here lately that we have been playing indoor for 5 weeks already and not yet once have we needed to due to the weather being so nice outside.

Good indoor tennis for two hours last night. Good, of course, with 6-4, 6-3, 5-2  !
My partner, who ran down everything, should take much of the credit but I did not lose a serve, or even double fault, and was OK at the net. My return of serve, though, was pretty awful.  Fortunately partner did his bit! I must start trying to read people's serves better.

It would have been nicer to have played outside but it is convenient to have the court there and waiting at the agreed-upon hour.

Played outdoors this morning. 40 degrees and everyone wrapped up. We could only play for an hour and my partner never quite warmed up. I was playing OK with return-of-serve a lot better and some good volleys. We lost 2-6 but it was nice to be out there hitting  .

Ahhh, funky time to be playing outside.  The only way it is acceptable in my mind at 40 or below is if the bright day sun is shining on you.  Early morning or evening when the sun is going down can be a bit brutal.  Makes it rough around here since most of us work during the warmer day-sun hours.

I've actually dreamed    of migrating to and from Australia on an Endless Summer  program. Birds do it. But it just seems too complicated administratively not to mention with the way everyone's  (including mine) economies are going  .

Funny you should mention that, but other than a bit of a drop in the 401K life is good here.
Has your weekly/monthly/yearly budget really changed at all or is it just the media hype that's gettin' ya down?

If you and DMast move here I will guarantee you unlimited tennis 4 times a week.  Of course it will cost you $3 per outing as a guest fee.  At your discretion you may substitute a can of balls for the cash!

Australia is in the mix as is the Philippines. I'm seriously looking at that, as I hate winter with a passion.
I'd love to head up there sometime for a quality hit. Maybe some video.

That's a bargain! I pay $11 guest fee here at one of the Washington clubs, such is my desire for yet another game  !

No, only paper losses so far. My main worry is the global credit system.  When you can't trust the ratings people, it's hard to trust any organization, especially the banks, to come clean about their debt obligations.  But life IS good here and there is so much for which to be grateful  .

I've got friends in Chile; an alternative southern hemisphere retreat but without resources. I played a bit when I lived there. It was hard getting accustomed to having the ball kids around. I've always been used to getting the balls for myself .

Very true. Especially when the ball kids are inexperienced, and don't know what the right time to get the balls is. Last trip to the Philippines was OK, but the trip before that we had some real bad ones, and they did more to disrupt play than if they weren't there at all. Running across when you are about to start a ball, or not picking balls up when they needed to be picked up.
You are right about them changing the rhythm of play even if they are good at it. We are so used to having that time going to get balls as a pause to reflect, or catch our breath. But when the balls are right there when you turn around, you end up playing quicker, and it kind of messes with your timing.

I lived La Serena, which was founded way back in 1544 and still in the 1960s, had a strong colonial flavor. The Club de Tenis (clay)  was very upper crust. The company where I worked had a usuable hard court and that was more fun. I also played in Santiago on courts arranged by friends. Valparaiso was for me the city with the most character. The local equivalent of San Francisco, it seemed. One was very conscious of the strong naval tradition there.

Viña del Mar is pretty nice, too. Great place for long, lazy seafood lunches, sipping vino blanco at a restaurant overlooking the sea.  Tennis tournament in January must be fun but I've never been around for that.

I had a good hit early this morning at 8am with the instructor. Even though I was digging into my quarters jar to pay him, it was worth it!  I really get to hit a lot of balls during this hour and feel my game is steadily improving. Most useful today was the work we put into placement of volleys.

It is clear that as one gets older and most things start to become slower, in tennis one just has to learn to become more crafty  .

Only two more weeks of election stress.
