I'm trying to get a 6 month to a year long fellowship at the Brookings Institution.

Your weather worries me since I'm thinking about moving to your neck of the woods. Are there any indoor courts there?

Yes, there are lots of them , Pacer. The counties operate some of them. They are not cheap and getting into the system requires a certain amount of in-house knowledge.  My indoor tennis group of 6 generally manages 2 hours a week at one of them. Some of the outdoor courts develop bubbles (and presumably associated clubs) in winter. Then some of the health clubs operate them year round (I've no experience there) and then there are the horrendously expensive country clubs. I expect there are also some associated with the 3 or 4 big universities in the area.

By in-house knowledge, you mean you have to know people?
I think the universites might work for me.
Is tennis pretty popular out there? I mean do a lot of people play?

People can tell you about refinements in the system that you'd never see in print. 

Yes, a lot of people play which is why indoor time is hard to get in winter. I've had no experience at getting time in the universities but I suspect again it depends on who you know. The big universities within DC are George Washington U and Georgetown. In Maryland, it's the University of Maryland. In Virginia, George Mason U.

I hope, if you come this way we could meet, even though I'd never take you on at tennis      .

Pacer, did you ever read about the personal consultation Sigmund Freud had with the composer Gustav Mahler in Leiden, 1910. Mahler was having problems with his young wife.  Fascinating stuff.
......but I digress from tennis. 

Mixed doubles last night with the ladies. I started off deplorably. Couldn't serve, literally couldn't make contact with the ball sometimes. I could tell in the warmup that things were not right. Lost my first two serves (double fault included) and the first set 4-6 and was expecting to be banished forever to the outer darkness by my partner  .

However, things got better second set  . Her serve went off a bit and I started to win all of my serve games comfortably. I started to get some rhythm and into it did well putting the first serve into the body of the opponents. I also had some neat almost happenstance volleys.  We got that second set 7-5 so all ended well.

No, MT, I don't think I'd really want to bother. It's more a statement of fact than a complaint. The mental does have a lot to do with it. I'm at my best after "a bad day at the office". As much as anything the pre-match routine is a hot shower which I feel loosens up the joints!

We are blessed with ample court time here and regularly enjoy sessions of 3-5 hours.
Several of the players in our group do 30 min. of light cardio to loosen up before hitting the courts.
If we have the time, I enjoy hitting lots of serves and returns to get loose.
