Topic: Will Federer ever get the #1 ranking back?

John McEnroe has talked ad nauseam how he was unable to get the #1 ranking back when he eventually lost it after his nearly four-year reign at the top and also how he was unable to win another grand slam after 1984 despite only being 25 years old.

Federer's 4 and a half year reign has come to an end and he has yet to win a major this year and could be in danger for the rest of his career. He turns 27 this August 8th.

I think he'll get it back eventually: he wont always be playing this badly.

He can get it back, but only if Nadal falters. I don't see him finishing the year at #1. He's still got points to defend at the US Open, and other indoor events. But the roles will be reversed next year. I Nadal can't defend his clay court points Federer could retake it.
Then there's Djokovic. I just wonder about his commitment at the moment. His big chance came at Wimbledon but he lost early there and in Toronto. He's lost his way a bit. He will need to refocus if he wants to catch either Federer or Nadal.

THis just isn't federer's year...
He'll definitely come back strong into the second phase of his career... It just takes a little time.

Nadal will have a tough time defending all of these points.  But, if he faulters, Djokovic will be a factor as well.  This is a tough question...In my mind, it's 50/50.  I'll vote yes...

I don't see him doing well at the Open, so I'd say only by virtue of the calendar, sort of like a Marcello Rios or Carlos Moya thing.

In 1996, Sampras lost Round 3 of the AO, lost 3rd round of Indian Wells, semis of Key Biscayne, semis of FO, quarters of Wimbledon, quarters of Cincinnati,  and won relatively small titles at Indianapolis, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Memphis and San Jose.

He went on to win USOpen and the TMC.

Was everyone shooting him down at this point back then too? Just curious.

Because he came back strong for another 7 titles after this point. He was 26.

We'll see how the rest of the season unfolds and what it bades for the upcoming year. Go ahead, mark him dead if you want. I personally wouldn't put money on him not making it back to the top. If we thought this year was the least points he had to defend in a while, next years a joke comparatively.
