ATP Vienna
1st Round: Philipp def. Gicquel 62 62
2nd Round: Philipp win  ;-() as DelPotro withdrew

Del Potro Injury Sends Kohlschreiber To Vienna Quarters

Vienna, Austria (AHN) - German Philipp Kohlschreiber advanced to the quarterfinals of the BA Tennis Trophy without swinging his racket, as no. 3 seed Juan Martin del Potro withdrew due to a toe injury Thursday.

The unseeded Kohlschreiber advanced to the next round against Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, who earlier booked a last-eight berth with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Guillermo Canas of Argentina.

Three others won Thursday to complete the quarterfinal cast-Austrian Jurgen Melzer, Spaniard Feliciano Lopez and Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Melzer thrashed Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6, 6-3 and will next meet Lopez, who defeated Santiago Giraldo of Colombia via the same score.

Monfils, the no. 8 seed outplayed Czech Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-3. He will oppose second-seeded Fernando Gonzalez.

The other quarterfinal match pits German Philipp Petzschner against Carlos Moya.

Champion Kohlschreiber out of Auckland Open

WELLINGTON, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Defending Champion Philipp Kohlschreiber withdrew from the Auckland Open with a shoulder injury on Thursday, casting doubt on his participation in next week's Australian Open.

The 25-year-old German, who beat Juan Carlos Ferrero on Wednesday, was forced to pull out of his quarter-final with Spanish second seed David Ferrer.

Kohlschreiber had entered the Auckland tournament with the shoulder tendon injury but had been using painkillers to play.

He will decide whether to play at the Australian Open after undergoing MRI scans to reveal the extent of the damage.

"I am very sad about this," the fifth seed told reporters. "But I need to what is best for my shoulder.

"I felt fine after last night. But after five minutes of my warm-up I was feeling big pain in my arm and I felt pain no matter what shot I was playing."

Kohlschreiber received medical advice and was told it would be best to withdraw and rest. He will have a scan in Auckland within the next two days before he decides whether he heads to Melbourne Park.

This one's for you Lug  :))

Comments from match: Kohli d. Roddick AO 08 R3

"I took his best stuff for five sets and I thought I was going to get him to break or to fold. I thought if I kept it on him long enough that that would happen," said Roddick after 3 hours and 5 minutes of grinding it out.

"He [Roddick] was throwing screamers at Kohlschreiber, but it wasn't enough. I don't remember if I have ever seen two guys play so flawlessly. Roddick did not lose this match. Kohlschreiber beat him."

" It was such a spectacular five-set match which lasted nearly four hours in the early hours of Saturday morning in Melbourne. It certainly had me glued in front of my TV for hours.
The score was 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9), 6-7 (3), 8-6. Victory to the German. Roddick could have a better chance of winning if Kohlschreiber had not created 3 ridiculous (Jim Courier who interviewed him said so) passes in the last game! " - Some blogger reflecting I think the opinion of almost everyone who watched this amazing amazing match.

I don't care much for the final result but I want a rematch of equal or better quality!! It's a win for Tennis!

I thought Kohl was the better player, but I had picked Querray because I thought Kohl had some physical problems.  So much for that.  But good win for him.  If I knew he was 'healthy' I wouldn't have picked against him in this match.

Well that was tough one because he had problems with shoulder..But I kinda always knew that he will be jut fine for the AO and I am happy for him winning in straights...So definitely ,he's OK now..... Well done Kohli  ;-()
