Del Potro recovering after wrist surgery

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Defending U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro has returned home to Argentina to recover following surgery on his right wrist, which could keep him out for most of the Grand Slam season.

Del Potro said Thursday he felt "more relaxed" but declined to speculate when he might return.

Reports in Argentina suggest he will be miss at least three months, which would keep him out of the French Open and Wimbledon -- and possibly the U.S. Open. He will also miss Argentina's quarterfinal tie against Russia on July 9-11 in the Davis Cup World Group.

The U.S. Open begins on Aug. 30.

Del Potro, ranked No. 5, has not played since a fourth-round loss at the Australian Open.

"In spite of spending a long time away from the game, I will return to the court," he said. "I don't know where I will be in the rankings. The only thing I'm thinking about is getting back and enjoying it."

Del Potro said he expected to return to the United States in two weeks to see the doctor who performed the surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Injured Del Potro out of US Open


Del Potro is one of only two man to have beaten Federer in a Grand Slam event

Argentine Juan Martin del Potro will not defend his US Open title as he does not want to rush his recovery following surgery on his right wrist.

The US Open starts on 30 August, but Del Potro is targeting a possible return at the Paris Open in November.

"If all goes well, I'd return after the US Open," said the world number five.

"The tournament is and always will be very special for me, all my life but I don't want to rush things," added the 21-year-old.

Del Potro has suffered with tendinitis in his right wrist as far back as October and has not played since January's Australian Open.

He underwent surgery in Minnesota earlier in May before returning home to Tandil, Argentina, to recuperate.

His height a long arms make the lever action on his joints extreme - its going to be a hard road back for the big guy.
 
When he won the US Open last September, the Argentine became the first man other than Rafael Nadal to beat Roger Federer in the final of a Grand Slam tournament.

Del Potro suffered a recurrence of the original injury at the Kooyong exhibition event in the new year ahead of the Australian Open and continued to struggle with the problem at the Grand Slam event, losing in the fourth round to Marin Cilic.

I can't imagine either of them are relieved that an opponent is injured and out for most of the season.

I hope he can get back to top level tennis, there's no guarantees.
But he can work on fitness, movement and other areas he may have neglected.

And then to stay healthy once he does comeback is a question too.
A lot of things have to go right to be at and stay at the top, especially in today's physical game.

The one thing on Del Potro's side is his age and the constantly improving knowledge on rehabilitating sports injuries.

True, but winning the FO/USO suddenly became a lot easier without Del Potro in the mix.

Well, you specifically mentioned their 'relief' at his being 'injured and out'.  That is what I doubted.

Del Potro yet to pick up a racket

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Defending U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro has yet to pick up a racket after wrist surgery despite being on the tournament's provisional entry list. The start of the Grand Slam is just over five weeks away.

Del Potro said Saturday on his Twitter page that he "continues getting better" but said he could not set a date for his return.

"I still haven't picked up a racket," he said. "This is why I can't set an exact date."

The United States Tennis Association said in a statement Thursday that Del Potro was "expected to return to Grand Slam competition."

The Argentine has been sidelined since January with a right wrist injury that required surgery.

Del Potro's trainer also put his U.S. Open return in doubt.

"Nothing is sure," Diego Rivas said. "The goal is to return in Bangkok."

The Thailand Open begins on Sept. 27.

I was hoping he'd give the USO a try, just to see where he's at. But it looks to be awhile before he can play well.
I thought he was further along in his recovery.

I concur. Federer and Nadal play this sport for its challenges and not for the wins alone. I am sure they value the fame, money etc that their success on the courts bring them but not at the cost of experiencing the exhilarating feeling of competing with the elite of the tennis world. Del Potro has proved to be dynamite in the last 2 autumns, so naturally, his miss will be felt by the men on the tour, especially in the lead-up to the USO. Till date, Del Potro has proven a true Champion, in victory, as in defeat. So, his miss is a real blow for the ATP.

Do you forget - decoturf is Nadal's kryptonite. Even when he was riding the highest in summer of 2008 it was the case and he was 22 and had less knee issues then now.

In 2008, when Rafa was bundled out of the AO by Tsonga, I wondered if Nadal will win a Grand Slam on the fake stuff. Rafa came back the next season to win the Aussie Open in a ferocious display of of attacking baseline play. Rafa has always stated he is an all-court player and he has been vindicated in his assertion by winning titles on every surface. The USO is the only jewel missing in his crown. After being pummelled into submission by a rampant Del Potro at Flushing Meadows last season, it would be a brave man who would say a red-hot, fit and hungry Nadal stands no chance of winning the title in New York

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal and U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will play in the upcoming Thailand Open, organizers said Thursday.

Nadal, the reigning Wimbledon and French Open champion, withdrew from last year's Thailand Open due to an abdominal injury.

''This year with my health and body in good shape, I am really looking forward to playing some great tennis for the Thai fans,'' Nadal said in a statement issued by organizers of the Sept. 24-Oct. 3 indoor tournament at Bangkok's Impact Arena.

Del Potro has been sidelined for several months because of surgery on his right wrist, but might be fit to defend his U.S. Open title after being placed on the provisional entry list for the tournament on Thursday.

The U.S. Tennis Association said Del Potro ''is expected to return to Grand Slam competition'' for the U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 30.
