Topic: socialism...of any kind

I despise Socialism of any sort.

Implicit in capitalism is the reality that there has to be "winners" and "losers". And government provides the following services for those who can't afford to pay for them out of pocket. (I defy you to find me "winners" that didn't accumulate their wealth without the free-handouts of the federal government at some level.)

Give me an up   or  down     vote on the following.


public education

police

fire department

defense

postal servive

sewage/sanitation

hospitals


infrastructure-if it's a good idea to build a freeway from SF to NYC (a) how do you collect the funds? (b) when are the engineers, paving companies, etc.. paid? (c) who owns the freeway? (d) who gets to use the freeway? (e) were you on the pipe when you came up with this half-baked plan?


Naivety gets simpletons a long way in life, but provide me *PROOF* that corporations would pay me $10K more today if they didn't pay my health insurance. What *EVIDENCE* is there to support the notion that corporations wouldn't do exactly as they do today, i.e., hoard all the profits and cash money for the senior management and executives.

  

Reading back on stuff I've missed over the past week, this post caught my eye. I know it was aimed a monster, not me, but what the hell...

public education mixture for me: I think that everybody has the right to good quality schooling, but if there is a state monopoly, it gets inefficient, so I'd support some form of voucher system, where schools are run independently and charge fees, but the state supplies students with the money for whatever school they want.

sewage/sanitation Over here it's currently privatised, I think having your s**t cleaned up is a pretty basic right that we shouldn't be directly charged for.

I'll add another one: broadcasting (i.e. TV) :thumbs-down: Over here, we have the BBC, which is state-funded, and through a licence fee, anybody who wants to watch another TV channel has to pay to watch BBC. I think it should be made to compete on an equal footing with the other broadcasters.

And another one: gas/electricity/water. Water and heat are 2 more pretty basic needs for life, I think one of Thatcher's biggest error's over here were the privatisations of these 3, and although the Labour Party constantly hark back to Tory privatisation in Thatcher's government, they haven't re-Nationalised anything.

Ain't that the truth, brothah. We'd be wise to adopt the European health care model. But there's too much money for the few to be made, and that will always trump the well being of the many.

So I saw this thread today, read through the first page, and was going to comment "I'm glad that this issue is being discussed so civilly, debating about ideas as opposed to insulting the person behind those ideas". 

Then I got to the second page and saw some ugliness sneaking in.  MT, I may not agree with your politics, but you're definitely taking the right approach here and I commend you.
