I started this thread a long time ago (April 2007) called "passing the torch" lamenting the fact that I knew that Marat was in the twilight of his career.http://www.tennis4you.com/forum/index.php?topic=6283.0
From the time I first got hooked on tennis watching John McEnroe, I've had a favorite active player.
1. John McEnroe passed the to torch to
2. Jim Courier passed the thorch to
3. Patrick Rafter passed the torch to
4. Marat Safin passed the torch to
At that time, I tabbed Gasquet the front runner. Later that year, I saw Tsonga at 2007 USO. After his run at 2008 AO, he and Gasquet became the clear favortites to become the torch bearers.
I can now say that Marat Safin will pass the torch to Richard Gasquet.
It really helps to have a favorite player; kind of like music. Many people I know think music ended with the Beattles or Pink Floyd. I always have current favorite bands, I couldn't imagine music ever ending.
I would never be a WTA fan per se, but it doesn't help when the gap between the torch passing is Chris Evert to Justine Henin!
