What year will Wimby change its speed to suit Murray?
« on: January 01, 2009, 10:38:24 PM »
Doesn't Wimby pick its winners by playing with the surface speed and ball combination...?   Isn't the grass too slow ("green clay" some have said) and the balls too fluffy now?

I got next year  ;-()

Right, and at the very time he was peaking, the Wimby officials were slowing the court and began using heavier balls to benefit a more all court game.

IIRC, he reach the semis 4 times prior to 2002, when the powers that be paniced and started tinkering because me and the ROW save for 9 people on T4U were losing interest. Hard to say he hadn't peaked by then. But you'll say it...

I'll say the powers that be were already doing their tinkering prior to 2000. The were already going to heavier balls at that time, and the players were already adjusting their approach. How else would we have seen a Todd Martin make the semi final in '94 and again in '98. serve/volley players still had some advantage as the 1990's drew to a close, but groundstrokers were starting to make their mark in the 90's as well.
I'll just mention Agassi's '92 victory in passing. But I'm not sure if that can be attributed to slower conditions, or just raw returning talent.

You were just silly until you went back to Agassi '92.

you call me out on making useless poll options and yet you create a '2009 or 2010' option in addition to individual 2009 and 2010 options!  :rofl_2:

I said 2010. EVeryone has to see what Murray's year will be like. AFterall this is his first year as a serious top player. Can he deliver like Djokovic did in HIS first serious year as a top player (1 GS, 2 GS Semis, TMC, 2 MS I think..), if he can and especially does well on Grass then Wimbledon might make the changes.

I'd choose a "never" option if there was one. But this is clearly an agenda based poll. So it's pointless.

Only Dmast can't appreciate this thread for what it is. I'm beginning to wonder what the "D" stands for...

Anyway, 6 votes have been tablulated thus far! :thumbs-up:

I agree, I think a "never" option is far more usefull than a '2009 or 2010' option  :)~
Who knows,  maybe the British don't like Murray afterall and don't care for him?

Since (by accounts) he doesn't really like them that much, that might not be far from the truth.

Hard to deny that they haven't embraced him after his 0-2 comeback v Gasquet last year. He seems to have reciprocated. It may not be his favorite slam, but I haven't heard him say anything disparaging about the English in some time. And I do believe that Murray Mound (or Mount) supplanted Henman Hill. But if Dmast says otherwise, well...he must be clinging to old accounts.

Anyway, sid would be the go to man here.  :rofl_2:  sid, can you feel the Murray lovefest in London?

Well since the roof is going to be introduced this year, I'm sure that if it's closed it will be faster due to the "indoor conditions".
Be the change that you seek.

Hard to tell if they'll do it, but I certainly hope they'll do it, and this year!  Murray's a very smart player, and I think a somewhat faster surface could really help his game.  He'll still have to get past Fed for the next couple years, but I think a faster surface could definitely help him against, say, Rafa.
Good luck on the court is nice to have, but it's usually extraneous when playing against Baker.
