I am terrible at feeding.
« on: February 12, 2009, 04:58:36 PM »
When warming up, and people want good feeds to start off, I have a hard time doing this.  Especially if they want volleys at the net.  My general shot is aimed like 5 feet over the net and i dont want to just blast it in their face at the same time.   Any tips?

I use to be horrible at it too, still not phenomenal.  Raw practice yo...  I wouldn't worry about it too much as it does not affect your game.  :)

However, try watching the ball off of the strings.  Cannot hurt!

I used to have a friend who was a better player than me on the whole, but he couldn't feed worth a.... Well, let's just say he could feed very well. Every 5th feed or so was way off into the forehand corner (he was a lefty).
To my his problem was his swing wasn't straight enough through the hitting zone. He whipped the racquet around so much he didn't have good directional control over his shots.
Focus on a longer smoother swing through the the hitting zone. You don't need too much topspin, and if you are using your shoulders properly, you don't need a big swing.

Is he referring to general warm up or just the initial feed?  I took it to mean the initial feed to start the rally.

I'm assuming he means feeding for drills. I'm not sure there is any real tips to be given besides practice and extend your follow through in the direction you want the ball to go.

That's what I'm talking about too. My friend had a very difficult time starting rallys.

There was a drill that I used to do that really helped me place the ball where I wanted it to go. I would hit through the ball, but instead of following through across the body(or over the shoulder) I would fully extend my arm out in front. This way I got excellent follow through and control. Hopefully I'm explaining the drill well.

I was a better feeder as a beginner than I am today!  It's all mental.
I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, "You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit." As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run. If you're flammible and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit.  - Mitch Hedberg

Shortly after becomming a Staff Pro at the local Public Facility ...I got a dream client. 3 Sparring Sessions a Week, which is a Private in which the client is an Advanced player capable of keeping only as many as 6 balls..alive over the net and inbounds MUCH more than walking around picking up balls!  THIS is, many times, a Staff Pro's "fun tennis"!

This is to say that's what you're wanting to achieve, is the goal of most beginning AND intermediate players. One in which, on demand, you can hit a 2 by 2 target from about 33 feet away and very consistantly. Then Drill with consistancy with a running formula in your mind ..one of Place over Pace ..that, in your shot selection ..you endeavour not to hit the ball harder than you can hit it over the net and in bounds.

If you have ur mechanics right..so as not to tax your arm, etc..then "The Practice Wall" can do this for you. I like a block wall..not a "backboard" so much..because of the response coming off the wall. Also..it's no pressure ..whcih is, many times, the problem with consistency.

When you're able to hit the ball with tremendous consistency ..picking and choosing how hard or how much spin you want..then you become a Club Pros dream job!    Dan
