Topic: Is this Federer's first time on SI cover?

This might belong in the Federer thread, but I thought I would put it here anyway.
I was waiting to see if Sports Illustrated would FINALLY put Roger on the cover.  Maybe he has been on there before, but I can't remember it if so.  Nice picture.  I don't think any player holds his head down for as long as he does after he hits the ball.  I like the belt look on his shorts.
Congrats, Roger!  Get lots of rest and come to London ready to break the record!

I believe it’s the first time.  It’s very hard to get into SI cover if you are a foreign athlete.  As you know, the American are biased and most of their athletes make the front cover.  As for Roger, he had to achieved something that’s incredibly rare in sport to get their attention.

It's his first solo cover, he and Nadal shared one after their 08 Wimbledon Final. I somewhat agree with the biased for their own players part, they do respect foreign players in other sports but tennis is only big when somethings done by an American or, like you said, when something incredibly rare is achieved.

Yeah, its kinda weird Fed never appeared on SI cover alone until today... considering he won 3 slams every year for 3 years.... but everybody is right.. first of all SI has always backed up his athletes (meaning americans), second of all, they always TEND to focus on national sports, (meaning, NBA, NHL, NFL, MBA, etc.) and to be true to SI, tennis has lost a lot of popularity and its not as important right now... SPECIALLY since americans only have Roddick at the moment and he is not doing so well at slams or important events...

I use to subscribe to it but when they dissed tennis for so long, I canceled my subscription.  (Now I guess I'll have to go to the newstand to get that ONE issue)
