Usain Bolt breaks 100m record again
« on: August 16, 2009, 03:16:11 PM »
Bolt took 0.11 seconds off the mark he made (admittedly jogging halfway) in Beijing with a new time of 9.58, beat Tyson Gay (9.71, American National Record) by miles and Asafa Powell took bronze. How low can Bolt take the 100m record? Can he lower the 200m record again, possibly this week?

In other news, sadly Dwain "you can't do well unless you take drugs" Chambers came 6th in 10.00, so by his own retarded standards he's using again :head-smack:

Watched all of the World Championships upto this point and last night was a special night in that stadium in Berlin, just incredible from Bolt to run that sort of time and even better to do these times at the biggest Championships in consecutive years! How you got to feel for Tyson Gay to run 9.71 and still come a couple of metres behind. Bolt is just something else and he thinks his limit may be the 9.4s and I agree he'll definitely get into them but who knows if he can go lower, he's that young and this is a pretty new distance for him as he's always been more into the 200m. A record in that event too we may just see.

Also special mention to our Brit Jessica Ennis who after seeing her career hang by a thread this time last year after having 3 fractures in her foot and missing the Olympics she comes amazingly and wins the Gold Medal in the Heptathlon :applause: :yahoo: Back in 2007 at the Worlds she finished 4th and looked 1 of the most promising stars we may have, last year was awful for her but now she's World Champion and she won the event by a huge distance. To come back from the injury she had in any single event would be difficult but to do that when competing in 7 events is a fantastic story and brilliant to see. So young too and only going to get better with the Olympics in London her big target, if she can stay injury free she's going to be huge at those Games in 3 years time! Well done Jessica :applause:

This guy is phenomenal....he's exceeding human limits....IMO Bolt, Phelps and Isinbayeva have moved beyond the reins of human capacity....hats off to these guys.

Oh yeah, forgot about Ennis, even the front pages in UK were all about Bolt. She was absolutely fantastic right through the competition: she's best in Britain in 4 of her 7 events (hurdles, 200m, HJ & LJ), came up with a PB in the shot put, supposedly her weakness, then got close to it in the Javelin to make the 800m a procession for her. Absolutely fantastic and given that she's so young she could be a massive favourite for 2012 if she continues to improve, and she could one day perhaps threaten the world record.

speaking of Athletics Chris, how's your career going? Last I heard you were on about 3:58 weren't you?

Jessica Ennis really was fantastic right throughout the 2 days and she really is the best in Britain at 4 of her 7 events, thats so impressive for an heptathlete. Lets just hope she's had the last of her big injuries because if she has I think she's got that much talent and she's young enough to become better and better and a huge favourite at 2012. I was disappointed the papers here didn't give Jessica more than they did.

I'm just fractionally down right now Kick on that, about 3 weeks ago I lowered it to 3min 56" so that was really good for me. Just keep going really and see how we go. Was fascinating last night watching the 1500m semi's and their times and tactics. 20 seconds off my best and I could have been in the World Final  But 20 seconds over that distance is absolutely huge, so its easier said than done.

Really fantastic performance from Bolt. I don't think anyone expected this. Everyone knew the world record could be broken, but by such a margin? Indeed, kinda sad to see Gay give his all, and still come up short. Bolts claims he isn't near his limit, and after this, who dares to say otherwise?

Just imagine the insane time Bolt will achieve if he ever gets out of the blocks decently! 9.4s isn't out of the question.
I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, "You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit." As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run. If you're flammible and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit.  - Mitch Hedberg

Don't know what to make of this one...

South African teen wins 800 amid gender-test flap

BERLIN (AP)—Facing questions about her gender, South African teenager Caster Semenya easily won the 800-meter gold medal Wednesday at the world championships.

Semenya’s dominating run came on the same day track and field’s ruling body said she was undergoing a gender test because of concerns she does not meet requirements to compete as a woman.

uh... huh  :confused1:

Semenya took the lead at the halfway mark and opened a commanding lead in the last 400 meters to win by a massive 2.45 seconds in a world-leading 1 minute, 55.45 seconds. Defending champion Janeth Jepkosgei was second and Jennifer Meadows of Britain was third in 1:57.93.

I hope the girl has a dick, or this is a very sad story.

Hey Chris, if that 1500m qualifying time looks too far off you know what to do

Seriously, this story seems like horsesh!t. From what the IAAF representative said they aren't questionning that Semenya thinks she is a woman and has been brought up as such. They are suggesting she may be a man with female organs. But isn't that an essential contradiction? If you've got female sex organs you are a woman no matter how much testosterone you have in there. If there's an upper limit on how much talent a female athlete can have before she is classed as a man then is Usain Bolt allowed to run with humans? Or am I missing something blindingly scientifically obvious that says if you're born as a woman with female sex organs you can still actually be male? :head-smack:

:rofl_2: There you go then Kick we have a potential plan  :rofl_2: Its a tough one this and the IAAF are going off a lot of rumours really, but the biggest reason why they are taking these steps is because she's come from nowhere and 3 weeks ago just dramatically reduced her PB. When somebody makes just a huge improvement in no time at all they have to firstly check for doping, but also in the ruling there's this gender test. Usually it wouldn't come to this but unfortunately this time it has.

But enough of her huge congratulations to our Jenny Meadows who too a fantastic and so deserved Bronze Medal :applause: she timed it absolutely perfectly for the Medals and her strength and speed ose 100-150m was brilliant. So well done Jenny and add to Phillips Idowu's excellent Gold Medal yesterday in the Triple Jump :applause: where he jumped a life time best and if you can do that in major Championships you deserve the Gold Medal. He's been the nearly man so often, yet ranked number 1 in the world in the event for a good amount of time so to be World Champion is great.

But what on earth has a quick improvement got to have with gender? Men don't improve 8 seconds/year over 800m either. Her improvement is indicative of drugs if anything, certainly not being male and I assume she's passed all drugs tests.

Its part of the official ruling, and really she's just completely burst onto the world scene, as she's for the most part just run n Africa before. There's a lot of guessing going on here with everybody involved, I think its more to do with how she looks, her body and the way she actually runs, that all looks extremely manly and whether its right or wrong(we'll find out after tests) they're going by this more than anything I do believe.

To Bolt again, well he did it again, he broke the 200m record with an incredible 19.19 seconds to knock over a tenth off this record he set last year too. He was just so far ahead of the field and what an amazing bend he ran. He was so eager for this record, you could see it in his face down the straight. Simply amazing!

Bolt is a living legend and the gauntlet is laid for his fellow athletes. I cannot remember another athlete who, having transcended the competition, is battling for a place in the record-books, like this guy, except maybe, Roger Federer. Bolt is a phenomenon and we are witnessing some of the best running by the fastest bunch of men and women. The 100m final was a barn-stormer, but the 200m was a blitz.. Bolt was in a mood for a WR and that fast start he made effectively ended the competition. What a performance!   :)

Okay, this is the first I've seen of Semenya and she looks every bit as much a girl as Serena or Sam Stosur.

re: Semenya

Quote

The tests never unmasked a man posing as a woman, but they did turn up several athletes who were born with genetic defects that made them appear — according to lab results, at least — to be men. In 1967, the Polish sprinter Ewa Klobukowska was barred from the sport because she failed the chromosomal test, even though she had passed the nude test a year earlier. In the 1980s, the Spanish hurdler Maria José Martínez Patino was disqualified because the test revealed, to her surprise, that she was born with a Y chromosome. Her eligibility was reinstated in 1988.

Although the verification test has changed to adapt to new scientific understandings about gender — athletes are now evaluated by an endocrinologist, gynecologist, a geneticist and a psychologist — critics say the test is based on the false idea that someone’s sex is a cut-and-dried issue.

“It’s very difficult to define what is a man and what is a woman at this point,” said Christine McGinn, a plastic surgeon who specializes in transgender medicine.

Because of a range of genetic conditions, people who look like women may have a Y chromosome, while people who look like men may not, she said. Many times, the people do not learn of the defects until they reach adulthood. “It gets really complicated very quickly,” McGinn said.

I can't support penalizing a woman because she was born with a Y chromosome. No way.
