I could also make HD highlights in a few weeks, I just don't have a lot of ime at the moment.

As ruddy said, you can use
H264TS_Cutter to edit h264 video files. You just need to convert your .mkv into .ts (with
tsMuxeR for example). Then, the software is very convenient and it's easy to cut the file. The problem is sometimes you will have audio issues with the output file. Not always but sometimes and it's quite annoying.

Avidemux can also edit directly mkv files. As far as I'm concerned, I had some crashes so I gave up with it. But the last version (2.52) seems more stable and maybe it will work very well with you. So you can also try.
And actually, I use VirtualDub. You just have to add this
plugin and VirtualDub will be able to edit mkv files. It works the same way as Avidemux.
