champions league, former european cup, the masters cup. uefa cup, just a 250 event.
let's try with this post:
the connection between Torino and Inter.
Inter had played in 4 finals until yesterday, 64, 65, 67, 72. In 1967 Celtic beat Inter at my favourite stadium in Portugal the Estadio Nacional do Jamor, very close to the estoril tennis tourney and where the Portuguese cup is played each year. In 1972 Inter could do nothing to stop the great Ajax of Cruyff in Rotterdam. Ajax went to win 3 titles in a row from 71 til 73, then Bayern 74-76.
Valentino Mazzola was the captain of il Grande Torino until the tragedy of Superga in may 1949. The tragedy changed italian football style for decades. Italy went to the world cup in Brazil 1950 by ship and was not able to be 1st country to win 3 world cups in a row. Nereo Rocco invented the catenaccio (defense style) in 1952 while coaching Milan.
When Valentino Mazzola died at the Superga tragedy his son Sandrino was only 5 years old. Sandrino started his junior career at Inter and he listened too often "you will not be as good as your father". Sandro made debut in the mid 60's in the Grande Inter coached by the legendary Helenio Herrera, who made catenaccio perfection. He struggled at the beginning but then he became a regular in the starting XI as midfielder/forward. Angelo Moratti was the president, now the president is Massimo Moratti.
Inter played against Real Madrid, the great Real Madrid of Di Stefano and Puskas. the match where Fachetti (number 3 retired by Inter) stopped the wonderful Di Stefano. Inter defeated Real by the score of 3-1. At the end of the match Sandro Mazzola went quickly to exchange his shirt with the legendary Di Stefano, then Puskas stopped Sandro. Puskas was the captain of the best team never to have won a world cup, the incredible hungary of the early 50's who lost the 1954 world cup final against west germany, the germans decades later admitted they were doped. the national stadium in Budapest is called after Puskas.
Puskas stopped Sandro, shaked hands and told him: "we are going to exchange shirts. I had the privilege to play against your father and you are as good as him. you're a great succesor of your father. he would be proud of you. Then of course Sandro started crying.
the match was at the prater stadion in vienna and Inter had just won 1st european cup in 1964,with 2 goals from Sandro .
Inter repeated next year at the San Siro beating the great Benfica of Eusebio, 1-0
Puskas took part of the legendary Italy - Hungary match 3-1 for the italians when in 1947 la Squadra Azzurra played with 10 legends of il Grande Torino, including Valentino, all except the Juve goalie in the starting XI
