Sounds ribiculous to me.
Perhaps you should fly down to Mexico and then just hop the border like everyone else.... :\

It's easy peasy. :))

I had my appointment for an interview for the US visa today and after attending it, I read this:

I realized what an exact depiction of my story today this is.  :rofl_2: :rofl_2:

I am a student here...an international student...all my earnings go into tuition fees, how do they expect me to show 'significant amount' in my bank account? My prof is not gonna reveal everything that's done in research...sheesh I need a visa to meet my folks!!

Your parents are in the State? Or do you need a VISA to go back to India to visit your parents? I dont' think it's too clear to me.

No, I have my relatives in the US....and I have people in Seattle...just 3 hours from Vancouver. Firstly I had to wait for 6 months before I could even apply for a US visa and now that I did apply, they ask me to show some ridiculous proofs...they are overtly paranoid that I am doing some 'research'. Apparently anyone who does research is scrutinized a lot more! And I thought researchers help the world to become a better place  :rofl_2: Dunno if I'll even get a visa now

That's the norm with the VISA thingy. They need to know that you have sufficient amount to support yourself while you are in the States. Just borrow some money from someone, put it in your bank account, generate a statement showing the amount and then tell them at the VISA office that, it's coming from your own savings. I had done it when I was a student.

If she were a grad student (PhD anyway) in the states, she'd be a TA for undergrads in her field.

Its not the money now...its my research that's holding my visa. I can't do anything about it

It works differently in Canada. I was appointed as an RA. I didn't 'apply' for jobs. But yeah, generally speaking you can apply for jobs on campus if you are on a student visa and don't have a work permit too.

I had an option of TA'ing apart from RA'ing. It becomes too taxing. I am already working full time here.

Ok let me start with this one:

My advisor sends a mail saying that there is this film crew that's gonna come to our labs and shoot for an hour sometime in the first week of June and that we should be having 'very good results' to show them; so I send him a mail asking who the audience was going to be. He then replies saying they are some high school kids. And then he tells me these words exactly:
"I would like it if you can show the results of Fast Fourier Transforms of normalized mode shapes discussing the Anderson Localization phenomenon for disordered and non linear lattices".   :rofl_2:

These are HIGH SCHOOL kids for God's sake!!!! they wouldn't know the spelling of engineering!!   :rofl_2: :rofl_2:

Well, I'm supremely impressed that you know what the hell heck he's talking about. Btw, I got my RA's mixed up. I was thinking the R was Resident. :paper bag:  It had occurred to me later that it's Research. Not nearly as much :grind dance: fun for me.

In any event, if you have good stories, share 'em.  :thumbs-up:  And be sure to upload your video to YouTube.  :))
