I finally got to catch a bit of Raonic last night.
He outplayed the veteran Fish rather easily.
I like his serve and his attitude. Will have to keep an eye on this guy, I think he's got some serious potential.
Canada's Milos Raonic battled through an injury to defeat No. 13 Mardy Fish 7-5, 6-4 in second-round play at the BNP Parisbas Masters on Sunday at Indian Wells, California.
The 20-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., was attended to on court by a trainer during the first set for an apparent back problem that may have also affected his abdomen.
But after a small massage and a chat, Raonic shook off any discomfort and got back to carving up his American opponent under the lights at the Tennis Garden.
Raonic, ranked 37th in the world, has been on fire since the start of the season, winning his first career title a month ago in San Jose, and losing a hard-fought final to Andy Roddick the following week in Memphis.
Raonic backed up his victory over Fish in the Memphis semifinals. He saved three break points in the final game as he served for the victory to end the two-hour contest, which included a marathon 71-minute first set.
He is playing for the first time in a Masters 1000 event outside of Canada and will take on American Ryan Harrison in the next round after the 18-year-old beat Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Raonic failed to convert his first match point against Fish when his volley hit the net. He made good on his second chance, firing a forehand winner down the line.
Raonic finished with a modest ten aces and broke Fish's serve twice. He saved all eight break points against his own serve.
With the win, Raonic improved his record this season to 16-3.
