I just can't believe how many tragic events we are experiencing these days  :( These events of an Earthquake and a Tsunami are almost unbelievable and I just hope that as many people as possible survive these awful events :(

On a related subject, scientists have known for years that California lies on massive fault line and it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when' will something similar happen there. :scared:

I must admit that part of the world has worried me a lot for a good few years now because of exactly where it lies :(

That the planes it lies on 1 day will collide and something huge is going to happen all across that area, especially places like San Francisco. And I don't want to see disasters anywhere, wh're getting way too many of those these days!

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification.
I watched an interesting documentary on the Mariana Trench over the weekend.  How and why the plates move is fascinating to me.

The planet is constantly changing in many ways both above and below the surface.  In todays rapid news-sharing environment it's easy to overwhelmed by the constant stream of both man-made and natural catastrophes.  They appear to be increasing in frequency though. :(

That is such an interesting diagram Monster! I remember in school in geography looking into the planes in great detail and how delicate that part of the world is with how those plates are positioned. As you say the world is always changing in many ways so lets hope that area changes for the better, just look at how much the position of the Continents has changed over time.

The theory for the cause of the trench is that edge of the plate is heavier and therefore sinking, dragging the rest of the plate along with it.  Fresh magma flowing on the opposite edge of the plate partially fills in for what's been dragged away.

Thats very interesting to hear that as I've not heard that one before Monster. That 'partially fills' has to be te most worrying part of that I would say.

The way the information was presented, the plate is sinking into the trench faster than the magma is rising at the ridge.  I'm not sure what the repercussions are for this phenom.

Here is a link to a part of the show-  http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/image/marianas.html

And another explanation/diagram can be found here-

I am especially interested in the fish in this diagram-  they must be huge!!! :))

Thats all really interesting stuff Monster and its especially interesting to see the changes that happen within the world and how big an impact this has on everything else. With the sinking developing at a far quicker rate than the magma rising I have no idea what this is going to mean many years down the line, or who knows how many years we're talking about.

Those fish are huge then :rofl_2: how you fancy catching a couple of those 1 day? :rofl_2:
