9822 kbps download and 1850 kbps upload from the NY location

its not too shabby. that's on wireless with 5 laptops draining the bandwidth at the same time. i am kinda interested in seeing what a wired connection would fetch me.

the NJ location test is twice as good! 16mbps download and 3.5mbps upload

one last, from Red bank, NJ:

Verizon FIOS test says it gives me 43.0Mbs download, 5.5Mbps upload.

I get most of my music and videos from websites these days so need it.

Computer is hooked up to a TV and stereo in the living room and it is great for watching and listening to stuff.

For example, I can get onto Australian TV news programs on a daily basis.

This is a hot-button political issue in Australia right now as the government is attempting to build a 100Mbs fiber National Broadband Network to cover most of the country. Coincidentally there was a 45 minute news program this week on the ABC's Four Corners show. I finally got around to watching this tonight. It presents well the economic problems and discusses the comparative uses of broadband and wireless. The line is that we will need both. The NBN will be immensely expensive. I expect the government will fund it by taxing the mining companies as much as they can.  If you want to find out more than you really want to know look at:

http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2011/s3184746.htm

If you haven't the bandwidth to watch, there is a transcript and all sorts of supplementary stuff that I haven't looked at.

One thing is clear; each of us has different uses for the technology. I have little  interest in Skype or video conferencing but have friends and colleagues who could not live without them. As said above, I need the bandwidth most for watching TV programs like the above and for on-line music.
