Well the first signs of Vika's health are good as what an unbelievable start to the event as she gives Dushevina and double bagel to claim the 6/0, 6/0 win :yahoo: :grind dance: :applause: Victoria was absolutely on out there today and right from first ball to last ball looked so good. I must say however the scoreline of 6/0, 6/0 was a bit unfair to Dushevina as some of the games were really tight ones and it was Vika who played brilliant on EVERY SINGLE big point as she broke 6 times from 7 opportunities and saved 7 from 7 breakpoints on her own serve. Vika from the ground looked brilliant and her return was a nightmare for Dushevina. Vika just needs to look after that serve muhc more in the tougher up coming matches and she's well placed to go very far here and at the rest of the claycourt events, if the health allows. But against a good player in Dushevina that's just a sensational start from Vika :)

Watch out for Azarenka on clay

I think Victoria Azarenka has looked as if everything is clicking together - although it is still a bit too soon to be looking ahead to her chances at Roland Garros.

The French Open is so much about form and how the claycourt season evolves week by week by week and there's a lot of time between now and then.

But for me Azarenka is definitely the one to watch heading into this claycourt season, despite her retirement with a shoulder niggle in Stuttgart last week.

If I had to pick a winner for the French Open right now, and not Kim Clijsters, it would be Azarenka.

I would say that Clijsters is a bit like Serena Williams in that she doesn't need any practice to do well in a Grand Slam. If she comes in to Roland Garros undercooked and unprepared but fit, for me she is the favourite to win it. If she's not fit or doesn't play then it's wide open.

It was great to see Agnieszka Radwanska playing well in Stuttgart again. She played really well and beat Francesca Schiavone easily.

It didn't look as though the spark was there for Schiavone. She was obviously trying very hard and there was no sense that she had lost her 100 per cent commitment approach but it definitely looked like the spark had gone and Radwanska just mopped her up.

When Schiavone won the French Open last year I thought it was going to be a one-off thing but she surprised me after that as she continued to play really well. She played some unbelievable tennis, especially in Australia this year. It was incredible from someone who had achieved her dream and could have been on a swansong for a year.

And so up until about two weeks ago I thought she had a genuine chance of doing it again on clay this year, of defending her title at Roland Garros, because there was no other real favourite and because she has the form and the experience and the talent.

And yet that seems to have coincided with this lack of form. So as we speak right now the jury is out. There is still time for her to get her form back but it looks at though she is going in the wrong direction.

You can never count out Caroline Wozniacki of course. She is playing a little bit more inconsistently than we've seen before but she reached the final in Stuttgart and you can never write her off even though she's never won a Slam and that will be a topic of conversation again the nearer we get to Roland Garros.

I'm not sure about Vera Zvonarea. I see her once again as the nearly person, playing well throughout - but I don't see her as the winner of Roland Garros in a month's time.

Sam Stosur reached the final at Roland Garros last year and the semi-final the year before but her confidence has completely gone this year. It's all mental for her and it can come back in a rush.

So I wouldn't write her off but what I would say about Sam is that whenever the pressure has been at its highest, whether it's the Fed Cup, the Australian Open or the final of the French Open, she has struggled and she's struggled consistently.

Until she proves us wrong, you'd have to think that that's going to happen again. I can't see a repeat of those hurrahs once again from Sam this year.

Of course it could be like last year when someone comes from nowhere to dominate the season - Julia Goerges was fantastic in Stuttgart last week. It might well be that someone comes through unheralded but hits big form at just the right time.

Such a tough loss for Maria K today as she loses an epic match with Gajdosova :( :( :( 5/7, 6/3, 6/7(4) and the worst of it was Maria K was up an early break in the 3rd set, let that slip but then served for the match at 6/5 and let that slip so it went into the tiebreaker and Gajsosova edged that to claim the match. After losing a real tight set and then being down an early break in the 2nd set Maria K then came on really strong, played some great tennis and got that break back and went much further to claim the set. Such a backwards and forwards 3rd then that Maria K just couldn't close out. An interesting stat from I find from this one is the 25 aces that were served! 10 by Maria K and 15 by Gajdosova.

Another great find, Chris. I can see Jarmila with a big number, but Maria K with double digits surprises me.

Brutal draw for Patty v. Vera :(
Sveta and Dominika should be a good one
Goerges vs [14]Kanepi -- I'd like to see this one

Another VERY disappointing exit for Kuznetsova as after losing the 1st set 3/6 to Cibulkova she regrouped and started the 2nd well getting up the early break 2/0. Then she goes on to lose the next 6 games and lose the match so easily. Yes Cibulkova is a tough player who fights for every point, but for Kuznetsova to lose that easily and in that manner well I just can't imagine how fans of her's react.

Really poor opening set from Maria as she struggled to find her feet and her game on the clay to start her claycourt campaign and lost the 1st set 2/6 to Rus :( :( :( Almost all the games were tight and went to deuce but Maria didn't play the big points at all well taking only 1 of 4 breakpoint chances while on her own serve was broken 3 out of 4 opportunities. Whether Maria wins this event on not, I really don't know why she didn't play 1 of the events this past week in Estoril or Barcelona as this is after all her worst surface and would have been good to havecome into this tournament with a few matches under her belt and also its been almost a month since Miami and Maria is the sort of player that needs a lot of matches in her to get her rhythm and her game flowing as she would like.

Much better set from Maria as she really turned things around nicely there to take the 2nd 6/3 and level things up :yahoo: :grind dance: :applause: 3 breaks to 1 was enough to take the set over Rus. Maria started the set really well getting up the early break but then was quickly broken back. However, she was much more on her game this set and looking more confident and quickly regrouped and then took the set going away. Now needs to carry this on early in the 3rd and look to close this one out without too many problems :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Really good come from behind victory from Maria today in her first claycourt match since last May as she beats Rus 2/6, 6/3, 6/2 :yahoo: :grind dance: :applause: Really did take Maria time to get into this match and the 1st set she didn't play any of the big points at all well being broken 3 out of 4 times and only taking 1 of 4 breakpoints chances. 2nd set though Maria really turned things around and after a slight blip of letting Rus back in, she then cruised through the 2nd. 3rd set Maria took the 2nd set momentum on and continued to play some really good tennis and in the end just had way too much for Rus. I'm really relieved that Maria came through this match as her first match on the clay and first match for nearly a month there was always potential for danger and after seeing Rus play some really good tennis in the Fed Cup for Netherlands she was likely to be a tricky opener for Maria. 2nd round it'll be either Wickmayer or Makarova and Maria will need to play much more like she did in the 2nd and 3rd sets here today in that one :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

thank god Sharapova cameback from a set down. probably the majority of fans only know Sharapova, Ivanovic, Kuznetsova and, if the follow last year R,G Schiavone. sad the Sisters not taking part, they are so beloved and amired in Spain.
makes me wonder how much Rus from the Netherlands was pushed by her parents to play tennis with the name Arantxa.

Yeah the tournament and the way that fan base is within Madrid really did need to see Maria's name in this tournament for as long as possible, that there's no doubt about.

As expected with Razai's form the last 7-8 months she lost 1st round to the qualifier Arvidsson so that defeat means 1000 points will be coming off her ranking, but not after this tournament as its a week earlier this year but after the Rome event she'll drop outside of the top 40 now and after looking like France's big hope at times last year, especially on the clay she's lost all of her confidence completely.

Wozniacki started her campaign with a very comfortable win over Morita.

Elena V playing her doubles partner Mirza who qualified here and started well up a doubles break 4/1 :yahoo: :cheer: :cheer:
