Would you want to know how long you'll live?
« on: May 19, 2011, 08:07:45 PM »
The Brits  :king:  (yeah, those guys) developed a blood test that might give you some inkling into this subject. It's new, so there's no scientific data supporting it's accuracy, or lack thereof. But let's say it's accurate within 3 years, would you want to know how long you have to live?

What?!?!?!?! Why not?

I love that the big ethical debate is over health insurance!!!!  :rofl_2: What a f**ked up system we have!  :mad1:

I would. would put things in perspective. I like having the big picture of the whole deal down pat before i start filling in the details. But that said the blood test is only a health estimate.. which has its benefits, it could motivate some people to take drastic effects to fix their lives to extend it if they have some 30 odd years left to make that 40 or 45.

But I'd be interested if someone could tell if like I'll die in a car accident tomorrow or something. I wouldn't give a crap about how fat I am and go drink and have fun at a club or something tonight and then spend some time with family and friends and then go sky diving and leave the parachute behind. End it with a bang!  :)

It would definitely put a different perspective on things. A life altering perspective. It would be like cramming for a final, if the final were "enjoy life with no pain."

Absolutely not. Unless  someone tells you  that you'll die at the age of 100,  and  with all your goals achieved.

If I had a year I could jump out of a plane tomorrow and survive.

Not sure what condition I'd be in though.  :dunno:

Does your life boil down to a mere list of goals? The fewer you achieve, the bigger a failure you are?

You might want to check that now before you invite some unnecessary pain into your life.

What's the purpose on life?

to achieve happiness,  I think.   To find happiness is  THE GOAL.   Everyone's got a different perspective,  what makes me happy could be  zero for you.

Sounds like we are in agreement, then. Are we not?

A Big part of happiness comes from realizing goals though. You can't sit on a beach and say I am happy and live your life like that. Happiness comes from satisfaction, pride, sense of accomplishment.. happiness comes from making a difference, knowing you are worth something to this world, knowing you made another person happy. Knowing that you have worked hard and earned your reward, knowing you are able to sustain a happy and healthy family and are making the most of what is given to you. From that perspective, you can say you try to extract happiness by setting and hitting goals - enjoy and be happy that you are able to set goals and strive for them and enjoy and be happy when you hit those goals, could be something as small as saving up a dollar a day to buy that coach purse or providing education and opportunities to kids in a country that is short of those things.

Sometimes goals are incongruent to attaining happiness. Look at Dinara Safina. Clearly her goal is to win a grand slam, but her drive and determination to do that makes her noticeably unhappy. Tennis is a laboratory for this kind of thing.

For that matter, look at J-Cap and Andre Agassi.

Do people really live by bumper sticker slogans?
I've read a lot of this here.

"Socrates' guiding rule was, "Know Thyself." These words are of eternal significance. No better advice has ever been give to man or woman. When one begins to explore this dictate it leads to profound understandings about all of creation. It makes unhappiness, fear, sadness, doubt, and all the negative emotions meaningless."

Did you know that we were all initially made of love? All other negative emotions kicked in, in order to understand what love truly was. You don't understand one without the other. I don't exist if you don't. God doesn’t' exist, if we don't thus the creation of human beings - to acknowledge God, understand, appreciate etc. Sounds very selfish, doesn't it? But is it? Do you appreciate your life you were given? Do you appreciate what you feel, see, smell, hear etc? Ask - why do we worship other human beings, follow or even stalk? It's because it's within us. We are designed that way ... on purpose. It's a deliberate attempt. That's why its important to know yourself first. Once you do, eveything else remains explained but it's probably the hardest ... impossible even.

There's no greater power than love and it's the highest emotion of all. The most powerful one – the highest of all. Love creates, hate destroys. Love binds, hate separates. Love's divine, hate's a feeling of hell. Love conquers all, as the wise men say.

You are everything I am not.
