So Andy Murray beat Roger Federer in a best-of-5 final at Wimbledon and is still not a major champion. That is just too classic.

So, as a tennis fan, do you give more weight to the gold medal or the slam victory? I'll ponder a bit before weighing in....

Depends on what country you're in - I think. I think the top players still put more credence in a grand slam because after your career is over, you will be known or thought of by how may grand slams you had. Players who know they probably would never get a slam, but did win the gold medal (the players from Chile, etc.) that gold medal probably means just as much to them and their country as if they had won a grand slam. Just my opinion.

What about the view of the fans?

I think if I were a player, I'd much rather have a slam title than a gold if I had a choice. No discounting that a gold is a great achievment, but as a long time tennis fan it just doesn't seem to carry the same weight. Not sure I can define why though....

I wonder if some casual fans of the sport give more weight to the gold....

I feel Murray will win a Slam or Slams @ some point in time.Winning a Gold Medal has to be bigger as you only get your chance every 4 years.J/Mac was talking on tv today with Henman & said you should @ least get the same points for winning the Gold Medal as in a Slam.

Yeah, I think different folks might give it different weight.
No doubt, at age 60, looking at your very own gold medal in the trophy case and sharing stories with your grand children about beating TMF in the final to take the titles is as special as it gets.

Perhaps this is the beginning of something big....

Well she has a shot if someone upsets Serena, Victoria, Maria, Radwanska, Kvitova, Kerber, Stosur, Na Li, Venus, etc, etc. THEN...she probably would win a slam!

Maybe next time, don't allow one player to have a day of rest before the final when the other guy has to play back-to-back days? Djokovic clearly cramping in the fifth set. Unfair advantage obviously.
