What do you all think? I'm not looking to grab advice really, but it is something we're facing here. Our ten year old would like her own Facebook account and at first I was like "heck no!" but the more I think about it - there are a lot of fun games she could play and several of her friends have their own accounts and would like to post/chat/play games with her.

So what do you think? Too dangerous? Just fine with supervision?

Thought 13 was the age limit. Are many of her friends on it?

She has three or four, Izzy included, and I am friends with Izzy. So there's no trouble in her using MY account, but at the same time I know our kid and feel pretty safe that she'd be okay with it. I'm just throwing the question out there for other people to get their thoughts. Had some interesting responses via my FB account already. Good stuff to chew on while deciding for ourselves.

Bad idea, but kids stopped going outside to play a few years ago and it's only going to get worse in the years to come.

my brother (10) also asked me a few months ago if he could have a facebook. I thought about it, said sure, why not, we have lots of cousins and family and his friends (who are also family friends) .. and its not like i wouldn't be able to monitor his account anytime - we are all open with our accounts and such. But basically that very evening I asked him and he agreed that fb really doesn't make sense for him, its really not worth it. he has plenty of things he can do without going online and fb-ing.

So like yeah, I guess I am ok with it but both of us agree that he doesn't need it. I am thinking the fact that I am flexible and ok with him having one makes it seem a lot more normal and not something he needs to have because its something so special that he can't have it.

I like that, Pawan! Oftentimes it becomes exotic and taboo if they know they CAN'T have it and that is enough of a draw for them to desire it all the more. Good point!

It wasn't really a hot button issue here, but it is something she asked for. She knows she can use my FB to chat with her friends, as I have friended them, but honestly those girls aren't on there like the adults are. And my other friend said (paraphrasing) "ask yourself how it benefits her life before you choose to add it into her life." She has enough going on in her life and she's not on the computer much at all anyway, esp right now while the weather is good. In the Winter when we can't go outside it's much more of a draw to play computer games.

If you let her get the page, make sure you're her 'friend' so you can monitor what's sent out and what is coming in. I got on one of my grand daughters for using 'inappropriate' language in one post ...and she had the nerve to "unfriend" me! I got on her for that too. When she came back later to ask me for some money, I played like I didn't know a friend by her name.

(2 can play that game). I see she's put me back on her 'friend' list now.

Ugh - it most certainly CAN be high drama on Facebook and I've had my share of it as well. Had a family member unfriend me bc I told her friend it was not cool by me to call my family member the C word - joking or not. And *snap* I was on the out with her. Forgive me for sticking up for my family and not understanding that the C word is actually a term of endearment btwn friends. I don't think so.

sorry but absolutely NOT. too young. the kid should be focused on school, sports etc. not some silly social network. I don't use FB nor tweeter. If I want to talk to my friends or my family I use my phone.

I use Facebook, twitter, etc. it is a great way to share information abs to keep abreast of things. I use Facebook more than Twitter, but both are great. However - if a child has these accounts - they definitely needs supervision and monitoring.

Its a Strict NO from me...Kids need to go OUT & play or play some good Indoor games..
not angrybirds or farmville on facebook..

i feel supervision & monitering Kids while their fb might not have good effect on them...

It's a definite no from me. Facebook is for adults that know how it can affect their lives. People have been sacked from their jobs and been excluded from school because of things posted on Facebook. Kids will learn the hard way that everything they post will affect them in later life if not immediately.

I am totally against of facebook for kids, because facebook is a thing that keeps us very busy in chatting, uploading pics, updating, and playing games and all and this is not good enough for kids to sticks to it. They should play more outdoor games and do lots of creative things rather than having facebook account.
