Federer biographer: Roger has a bad back
Ticker - Thursday, January 5, 2012

Roger Federer has a bad back, reports his biographer, Switzerland's Renee Stauffer, on Twitter. "I wasn't sure if I was going to play against Andreas Seppi," Federer said in Doha. "It happened against Gregor Zemlja (in the second round)." Federer added that it was "good luck it's only a muscular problem."

Federer needed three sets to beat Seppi on Thursday. He is scheduled to face France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals. The 16-time Grand Slam champion is on a 20-match winning streak that dates back to the 2011 U.S. Open.

Suddenly everything is in jeopardy. He should pull out of Doha immediately and rest up for AO. I can't believe he didn't W/D before the Seppi match and if he plays Tsonga that will be the height of stupidity. He is 30 and needs to take extra special care of his body.
Then we will fight in the shade.

It's only a muscular problem but playing that way can change how you move and cause other problems.
He should hang up the sneakers for now and get ready for the AO.

Didn't Del Potro have a serious back problem in early 2008 that almost led to retirement?

I just watch Federer against Seppi and Federer was like a machine.   No indication of a bad back at all!

Didn't know who he was then. His forhand might retire a few if he gets it back.  :innocent:

Just think how well he'd do if not injured.

He played the match anyway, so I guess he is doing alright.

Rafa is doing alright as well.

Edit: Federer doesn't take any risks, and retires. Tsonga is playing Edberg now  :))

I'm afraid this could be a career-ender.

Depending on which forecast you subscribe to.
Some predictors say there will be a 'major change' at that time.

Interesting to note the career parallels continue with Sampras. Sampras also had a bad back late in this career and he retired in 2002 at 31. So will Roger follow that trend?

Federer needs to follow Samprass, Agassi and just take some time off to heal and strengthen his back!  He still has a couple of years of competition if he does that!  If he does not do that; the end could come this year!

Agreed - Federer's career is on eggshells right now.
