Considering I only watch tennis for 7 years, I have to say I have no idea with history lengends.
So I am going to post something like.....

prime Safin vs prime Nadal
prime Hewitt vs prime Djokovic
prime Sampras vs prime Nadal
prime Aagassi vs prime Djokovic

In my opinion Federer played better tennis this AO2012, than in his prime (e.g. vs. Baghdatis in 2006 AO final)

Anyway, two matches I have watched multiple times are:
Borg vs. McEnroe (Wimbledon, 1980)
Federer vs. Nadal (2008)

I just love the contrasting styles competing to the max.

I never considered the contrasting styles element, but my dream finals fortunately feature that as well

McEnroe (S&V) v. Connors (baseline)
McEnroe (S&V) v. Lendl (baseline)
Gasquet (chicken crap desire) v. Nadal (superhuman will)

I think you should segregate dream final as in who you like playing and dream final as in what you want to see. If I wanted to see the maximum number of body-blows-40stroke rallies then I think we got our dream final today in the form of Djokovic and Nadal. Probably no two players in history are overall better at rallying from the baseline as these two are.

My dream final for the tennis would be something like:

Santoro vs. Federer
Safin vs. Murray
Gasquet vs. Hewitt - we've had these before.
Blake vs. Tsonga
Nalbandian vs. Monfils

or basically any combination of the above names as they can all play some ridiculous flashy tennis and for the most part (maybe not Hewitt and Blake), CAN use the whole court really well. Angles, volleys, deft lobs AND most have spectacular power when they need.

From the past, I'm not too creative but I loved watching Rafter and Agassi go at it and I loved Becker against most anyone.

I didn't understand what Babb was trying to ask initially, only when I knew it was in reference to Chris' apparent dream of seeing Vika and masha playing each other that I knew what babb was trying to say.

Your title is a bit misleading Babb. My dream is to see my favs against their chief nemesis. My nightmare would be to see my favs playing each other. Whom will I support in this case?

I don't understand what could be misleading about the title. And I don't understand why people would leave their favorite player out of their personal dream final, but obviously including their favorite player isn't important to everyone.

The other way to look at why some people would want their 2 favourite players in their 'Dream Final' is if 1 of your favourites was going to be beat up on how much worse would you feel if it was another player you didn't like rather than a fellow favourite of your's? Boy I feel so bad and disappointed for Maria having lost to Victoria like that but I simply can't dexcribe how I'd be feeling now if it had been Serena or Kvitova etc who had played Maria in the Final like that! For me it was a 1 off Dream Match on paper but in terms of the scoreline and 1 sided nature of it, it was anything but. But at least both my girls started the year with a Slam Final, 1 with their first ever Slam and within 2 weeks its almost certain they'll now be 1 and 2 in the World Rankings :)

Even though I don't "get it," I follow your rationale, Chris. At some point I'd be rooting against one of my favorite players and that doesn't feel good.

For instance: Courier is serving to go up 2-1 sets and a break on McEnroe. Do I want him to choke??? Yeah, but that feels s**tty, especially if #1 is on the line; i.e., beating McEnroe would make Courier #1 over Sampras. No thanks.

I think that's what falcon was saying, too.

With Nole-Rafa, it was easy for me to enjoy the tennis and root for both players because I didn't have a dog in that fight. Even though it's the best show currently on tour, Nole-Rafa is not a dream final to me.
