Sad day for tennis. I will always remember his late 2006 to early 2007 run(all those finals against Federer and 2007 Roma against Nadal). Then he made the 2008 Olympic final against Nadal.
Then we will fight in the shade.

I remember the first time I saw him play and COULD NOT believe his forehand.  It was unbelievable.
I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, "You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit." As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run. If you're flammible and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit.  - Mitch Hedberg

I have been heavily influenced by Fernando. After hearing Sjeng Schalken describe what it was like to play Fernando, I said, "That's the way I'm going to start playing." Fernando said he started playing that way because of having to face all pushers at his tennis club. That's exactly the what I was going through at that time. I stopped playing those guys because I started going big.

Quote

Steady Schalken In Semifinals
by Bob Greene
Thursday, September 5, 2002

Sjeng Schalken was fit to be tied -- until the fifth set, that is.

Schalken outlasted Fernando Gonzalez, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), Thursday and became the first player from the Netherlands to reach the US Open semifinals since Tom Okker in 1971.

"Three tiebreaks," Schalken said. "You have to win one, of course."

He should have won the tiebreak after the opening set. Instead, he let a 5-1 lead evaporate, as Gonzalez ripped winner after winner in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

It was Gonzalez, not Schalken, who seemed to control the points with his huge serve and groundstrokes. But as the day wore on under the bright sunshine and swirling winds, it was Schalken's steady game that prevailed.

The Chilean would either hit winners or unforced errors. At the end of the day, he had 73 of each. Schalken, on the other hand, had 52 winners and just 37 unforced errors.

Schalken wasn't just a spectator in the opening set, although it seemed that way, as each point was determined more by what Gonzalez did or did not do. With a grunt, the Chilean launched every shot, be it serve, forehand or backhand. And "launch" was the operative word.

"It was not easy," Schalken said. "He started, and I thought I was in the middle of a hurricane.... He has one of the biggest forehands in the game at the moment. I didn't know it was that big."

Then it was Schalken's turn, as he raced through the next two sets, at one point winning seven straight games. Gonzalez found the court again with his big strokes and once again pulled even, although Schalken was just two points away from closing out the victory in four sets.

"In the fourth set, I was a little bit tight," the Dutchman said. "I was happy I could pick it up in the fifth."

Three hours, 37 minutes after they started, Gonzalez and Schalken began their third tiebreak in five sets. It was all Schalken, who won the first six points, then weathered a last-gasp attempt by Gonzalez before grabbing a spot in the semifinals by capturing the tiebreak, 7-2.

"I didn't expect to be in the semis," said Schalken, who lost a five-set quarterfinal match to Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon. "It feels very good with my steady, consistent play to get to such a high level two times in a row."

Gonzalez has a lot of talent but a streak attitude and off and on court play.   He could be almost anyone if he was on; but he was just not consist enough to get into the top ten rankings.  He has a great backhand.  Hope he save his $$$$$.

had he taken one of those set points at *5-4 40-15 1st set in the AO final 2007, he would have retired with a slam.......another occasion which i thought things could have got interesting was the 2009 french open.......he almost toppled soderling and anything could have happened in the final against a hyper nervous fed.......i thought gonzo was more prepared for that final, it was NID that soderling was going to lose that final.......

adios gonzo......

One of my favorite tennis quotes-

Sjeng Schalken "I thought I was in the middle of a hurricaine"

Gonzo was such an entertaining player/personality.
The fire burns brightly within the Chilean!
