Tournament Info

The Family Circle Cup has a rich history on green clay that dates back to 1973, the year all of women's professional tennis was united in becoming the WTA. In fact, Family Circle is the longest running title sponsor in men's or women's professional tennis.

At its inaugural staging in Hilton Head, South Carolina, the Family Circle Cup was the first women's tennis event to offer $100,000 in prize money and the first women's event to be broadcast on network television. The tournament moved to Amelia Island, Florida, in 1975, back to Hilton Head in 1977 and finally settled in its current home of Charleston in 2001.

The event's list of champions reads like a roster of all-time greats, with names such as Tracy Austin, Jennifer Capriati, Steffi Graf, Justine Henin, Martina Hingis, Conchita Martínez, Martina Navratilova, Gabriela Sabatini, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Serena Williams and Venus Williams. Chris Evert was more dominant than anyone, capturing a tournament-record eight titles.

The Original 9, the nine players who signed $1 contracts with World Tennis publications publisher Gladys Heldman to compete in what would become the Virginia Slims Series in 1970, will reunite at the 40th anniversary of the Family Circle Cup in April 2012.

Venus & JJ Clashing Under The Lights

The second round of the Family Circle Cup continues on Wednesday and after a packed day session that includes Marion Bartoli and Sabine Lisicki, a stellar night session will pit two of the sport's greats against each other.

Bartoli, this week's No.3 seed, plays her first match of the tournament today, taking on Russia's Vera Dushevina. Bartoli had one of the biggest wins of her career in Miami last week, beating World No.1 Victoria Azarenka en route to the semifinals (Azarenka was a perfect 26-0 this year going into that match).

Lisicki, who won her first WTA title at the Family Circle Cup in 2009 and is this year's No.6 seed, begins against Czech lucky loser Andrea Hlavackova. Lisicki has had a phenomenal last 12 months - she was ranked No.182 in the world coming into last year's Cup, and is currently at a career-high No.13.

The night match will be a blockbuster between former World No.1s and Family Circle Cup champions Jelena Jankovic and Venus Williams. Williams made a very successful comeback to the WTA two weeks ago in Miami and won her first round match here in straight sets, but Jankovic not only leads their head-to-head, 6-5, she has also won the last four times they have played on clay.

Varvara Lepchenko and Jill Craybas will also fly the US flag today, Lepchenko facing No.14 seed Polona Hercog and Craybas playing No.13 seed Nadia Petrova.

The doubles also continues with the Top 2 teams in the world in action.

Venus defeats Jankovic in Charleston, 7-5, 6-0

Venus Williams looked strong in powering past Jelena Jankovic 7-5, 6-0 at the Family Circle Cup on Wednesday.

Williams won 12 of the last 14 games to take the matchup of two former world No. 1s trying to rediscover their old form. Williams had fallen to 87th in the world after missing more than six months because of a fatigue-causing autoimmune disease.

Williams returned last week and won four matches in the Sony Ericsson Open before falling to eventual champion Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets. This, though, may have been Willilams’ best showing as she evened her career record to 6-6 against Jankovic.

Williams fell behind Jankovic 3-1 before taking control. Williams cracked her serves all match long, topping out at 120 mph, and hit the lines for winners throughout.

Williams broke Jankovic’s serve seven times on way to her second win this week.

“I didn’t serve well and against Venus, you have to serve well,” said Jankovic, the seventh seed.

Williams’ serve got stronger as the match progressed. She appeared out of sorts following a 30-minute rain delay and quickly lost the first game back to move behind 3-1.

Jankovic was still up 5-4 and was two points from the set, but mistakes—a double fault and a wide forehand—opened the door for Williams as she won the final nine games of the match.

Williams, the 2004 champion here, will meet Anastasia Rodionova for a spot in the quarterfinals. Two more wins by Williams could bring the matchup the Family Circle most wants to see—Venus playing little sister Serena in the semifinals.

Bartoli & Lisicki Battle Into Round of 16

Marion Bartoli and Sabine Lisicki won their opening matches at the Family Circle Cup on Wednesday afternoon, though one had to battle for over three hours and the other had to rally from a set down to stay alive.

Bartoli, seeded No.3 this week, probably knew it was going to be a long day after the opening game lasted more than 30 points, but she managed to make the cut, beating Vera Dushevina in a three-hour, four-minute marathon, 62 67(3) 64.

The No.6-seeded Lisicki was broken twice en route to losing the first set but broke once in each of the next two sets to drop some knowledge and get past Andrea Hlavackova, 26 63 64. Lisicki is one of six former Family Circle Cup champions in this year's draw, winning the title in 2009 - it was her first WTA title at the time.

No.13 seed and 2006 Family Circle Cup champion Nadia Petrova also had a battle on her hands, having to save two match points to beat American Jill Craybas, 26 76(6) 62. No.14 seed Polona Hercog and No.17 seed Marina Erakovic won, but No.12 seed Yanina Wickmayer was upset, falling to Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.

The night match saw No.7 seed Jelena Jankovic play Venus Williams, not only a pair of former Family Circle Cup champions, but also former World No.1s.

Thursday: Five Former Champions Take the Court

No fewer than five Family Circle Cup champions will take to the courts today, with Serena Williams featuring in the afternoon session and Sam Stosur wrapping things up in the feature night match.

Williams, who won here in 2008 and is this year's No.5 seed, looked strong in her first match of the week, beating last year's finalist Elena Vesnina in straight sets. She now faces No.17 seed Marina Erakovic on Stadium court for a spot in the quarterfinals - it will be a first-time meeting.

Stosur, who won here in 2010 and is the No.2 seed this year, also looked solid in her opening round dismissal of American Jamie Hampton, and will face Galina Voskoboeva tonight for a spot in the quarters. The big-hitting Voskoboeva wasn't even in the Top 300 a year ago and is now Top 50, and she did also win the pair's last meeting, although that was back in 2006.

Venus Williams, Nadia Petrova and Sabine Lisicki make up the five former champs in action today. Lisicki is the most recent winner of the group, winning the title in 2009 - she is now on the verge of the Top 10, currently ranked No.13.

The first match of the day, at 11am, sees the No.3 seed, Marion Bartoli, take on Polona Hercog. Bartoli has never lost to Hercog in four meetings, though Hercog has pushed her to three sets in two of those meetings.

Venus is getting through all these top 20 players and scoring on the "bonus" points.  She will be ranked back in the top 10 with another few wins like she did at Key Biscayne and now at Charleston.  Of course, it going be all clay in a month or two anyways.

Both Williams Sisters In Cup Quarterfinals For First Time

Five Family Circle Cup champions were already in the round of 16, and they had another good day at the Premier-level tournament on Thursday, with both Williams sisters, Sabine Lisicki and Nadia Petrova all moving ahead in the day session.

Serena Williams, the No.5 seed, was never broken in eight service games en route to a 62 62 win over No.17 seed Marina Erakovic. Venus Williams, a wildcard here, rallied from 4-2 down in the first set and beat Anastasia Rodionova in straight sets, 75 62. The Williams sisters are now one win away from a semifinal clash.

"I hope we both get there," Serena said. "I have to win another match, and I really, really hope we both get there, so we'll see."

This is the third time both Williams sisters have played Charleston in the same year, but it's the first time both have made the quarterfinals the same year.

Lisicki, the No.6 seed, rallied from a break down in both sets to beat Yaroslava Shvedova, 75 64; No.13 seed Petrova dropped a lot of knowledge on No.8 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 61 64; and at night, No.2 seed Sam Stosur faced Galina Voskoboeva.

Other players into the quarterfinals were No.4 seed Vera Zvonareva, No.9 seed Lucie Safarova and No.14 seed Polona Hercog. Hercog upset No.3 seed Marion Bartoli - her win over the World No.7 was her first Top 10 win.

Thursday Night Session: Play is cancelled for the evening due to rain.

Fantastic Quarterfinal Friday Set

It's going to be a fantastic Quarterfinal Friday at the Family Circle Cup, with a slew of star names - including both Williams sisters - battling it out to make it to Semifinal Saturday.

The first quarterfinal is a blockbuster, as No.5 seed Serena Williams takes on No.6 seed Sabine Lisicki. The only time they played before this was in the semifinals of Stanford last year, with Williams rolling, 61 62.

"It can only get better," Lisicki said. "I was very nervous in Stanford in the beginning. In the second set I had chances - the games were close, so it was a good match from mid-second set on. I hope I can start like that this time."

The second match pits Venus Williams against either No.2 seed Sam Stosur or Galina Voskoboeva, the match that took the court on a rainy Thursday night. If it's Stosur in the quarters, she might have a tough time - Williams has won all four of their previous meetings in straight sets, including three on clay.

Next is No.4 seed Vera Zvonareva against No.9 seed Lucie Safarova. Zvonareva has a few edges - she won their only previous meeting, and she is also a two-time finalist here, in 2008 and 2010.

At night, No.13 seed Nadia Petrova faces No.14 seed Polona Hercog, a match-up between two players who sprung upsets on Thursday (Petrova beat No.8 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Hercog beat No.3 seed Marion Bartoli). The two played twice on hardcourts last summer, the series tied one apiece.

Venus is ranked 87th in the world right now:http://www.wtatennis.com/page/RankingsSingles/0,,12781~0~1~100,00.html.
Serena is ranked 11th.

So if Venus can have a win over Serena; that another big "bonus" points for her ranking.  Tennis is such a fun sport for sisters!

Stosur Outdoes Venus In QFs, Serena Awaits In SFs

Sam Stosur pulled off two major feats in one day, not just winning two matches, but beating Venus Williams for the first time in five career meetings.

Stosur's third round match was stopped in the first set Thursday night due to heavy rain, but she came back Friday morning to close out Galina Voskoboeva, 63 46 62, then went back on court two hours later and outdid Williams, 63 46 63.

"Today was very different than what we've been playing in, so it was good to get used to the conditions," Stosur said of the earlier match. "Maybe I would have preferred not to play two three set matches, but nevertheless, I'm happy to be through. And I'm very, very happy to have beaten Venus now."

Next up for Stosur will be Serena Williams, who won when Sabine Lisicki retired in the first set of their match with an ankle injury. Stosur trails Serena in their head-to-head, 5-3, but the Australian did win their only meeting on clay.

Seven players have beaten both Williams sisters at the same event before, and they are all former World No.1s (Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic).

The other semi is No.9 seed Lucie Safarova against first-timer Polona Hercog.

Saturday

Stacked Semifinal Saturday In Charleston

It's going to be a spectacular Semifinal Saturday at the Family Circle Cup, with two of the most powerful players on the WTA - Samantha Stosur and Serena Williams - renewing their rivalry for a spot in the final.

Stosur and Williams have played eight times before, their most famous meeting perhaps being last year's US Open final, where Stosur played almost flawlessly to win her first Grand Slam title. Stosur also won their only previous clay court meeting. But Williams leads the overall head-to-head, 5-3, and in their most recent meeting, 11 days ago in Miami, the American got her revenge, 75 63 - and blasted 20 aces along the way, equalling her personal best.

"For sure clay isn't her favorite surface, but it's always tough playing Serena no matter what surface you're on," Stosur said. "We've played a couple times in quick succession recently, and they've been pretty good matches, so I'm sure tomorrow is going to be no different. I'm really looking forward to it."

Only seven players have beaten both Williams sisters at the same tournament before, and only one time has it happened on clay (Jelena Jankovic did it at Rome in 2010, beating Venus in the quarterfinals and Serena in the semis).

The second semifinal of the day will pit No.9 seed Lucie Safarova against No.14 seed Polona Hercog, who defeated in the night match Nadia Petrova, a former champion here, winning it in 2006.
