On topic, a fifth set TB is very welcoming although it tends to rob the players who worked so hard to get there and it's over because of one tiny mistake. In other words, it doesn't give you too many chances and often extremely nerve wrecking (as a fifth set isn't enough for the nerves).
I personally don't like long matches. Occasionally long is okay as we see these days. I don't like short matches either. You can't get into it emotionally as it's over before you know it. In short, they both have their pros and cons. I don't think neither deserves to be on top of the other.
Also, I am not sure which one is better as far as suffering is concerned. Do you want a quick death or a long suffering one - given the premise that you are going to die anyway ... or do you? The longer one may give you some illusion or hope even that you may beat this, you may survive in the end. And then, sometimes, you do!
