The Gerry Weber Open is one of five grass court events on the ATP World Tour calendar, and gives players their first chance to play on the surface in the lead-up to Wimbledon. The Gerry Weber Open has crowned five German winners since the inaugural event in 1993: Michael Stich (1994), Nicolas Kiefer (1999), David Prinosil (2000), Tommy Haas (2009) and Philipp Kohlschreiber (2011).

Five-Time Champ Federer Returns
World No. 3 Roger Federer returns to Halle for a 10th appearance. The Swiss won five titles in five visits between 2003 and 2008 before finishing runner-up to Lleyton Hewitt in the 2010 finale. He has a 36-4 event record.
Rafa Returns To Halle - World No. 2 Rafael Nadal returns to Halle for the first time since a first-round defeat to Alexander Waske in 2005. Since then, the Spaniard has won three tour-level grass-court titles.
Kohlschreiber Defending Champion - Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber delighted home fans by winning the title in 2011. The 28 year old is bidding for his second title of the season after victory in Munich.
Berdych Mounts Challenge - World No. 7 Tomas Berdych won the Halle title in 2007 (d. Baghdatis) and also reached the final in 2006 (l. to Federer). The Czech is chasing his second title of the year.
