MARRERO/VERDASCO TRIUMPH IN UMAG FOR THIRD TITLE

Third seeds David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco captured their third team title of the year Saturday, winning an all-Spanish final against top seeds Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 6-3, 7-6(4) at the ATP Vegeta Croatia Open.

"I am sad I didn't play my best tennis in the singles but very happy to have been able to come back and win this third title with David this year," said Verdasco. "We are a great team and even though we only are able to play a few events together, we are proving to be one of the best doubles teams."

Saving all five break points they faced and winning 80 per cent of their first serve points, Marrero and Verdasco clinched the trophy in 90 minutes to add to earlier season triumphs in Buenos Aires (d. Mertinak/Sa) and Acapulco, where they also topped Granollers and Lopez.

"I want to thank Fernando for playing this week with me because I really get to play my best tennis with him," Marrero said. "I know it's not easy to fit in his schedule and it's an honour every time we get to play together. We are playing together next week in Hamburg and I really hope we can keep up the results."

Marrero improved to a 5-5 in doubles finals while Verdasco claimed his fourth doubles crown in six title matches. Granollers and Lopez dropped to 1-3 final record this season, highlighted by winning the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Rome.
