I asked Alejandro this year in my home event about his best tennis memory, and the answer surprised me,
he told me my best memory in tennis is the match I played against Federer on centre court back some years ago,
I said to him, but he routed you, you only won 4 games, I thought it will be the one 2 years ago when you were 2 sets up
and he insisited me, no, my best tennis memory is that very first match on centre court against Federer back almost a decade ago.

this brings me back menories of 2000, when I asked current spanish DC captain Corretja about an easy match against a certain Roger.
he told me, did you not realise this kid is bloody good and full of talent, it was a straight sets win but the kid plays outstanding,
they have a rematch a year later at RG, at that time, Roger was already well known and very respected, even if it was another straight sets win.

CONCHITA, Many thanks for the draw - it is beautifully presented!   And I enjoyed reading your comments.
In relation to the Olympic Games, I am looking forward to the competition too, and hope lots of records will be made / broken and various sports taken to new heights.
And how wonderful that you have met & chatted to Falla & Corretja.  Thanks for sharing their comments.

I hope we'll have some outstanding tennis here, with well contested matches & interesting surprises too.

The opening day is full of some potentially well contested matches.  The following caught my eye upon first inspection of the schedule:

Nalbandian / Tipsarevic.    I love DN's game, and hope he'll play well.
Kubot / Dimitrov.    Two players I enjoy watching, so I hope they'll have a good match.
Benneteau / Youzhny.  Another potentially interesting match, with both men able to provide some excellent tennis.
Troiki / Almagro - Inconsistency aside, both men enjoy a challenge & can play well to meet it.
Istomin / Verdasco - I like Istomin's game, and hope he plays well. Verdasco seems to have faded somewhat but it would be nice to see him play well.

There are no foregone conclusions, but I expect Berdych, Federer &  Del Potro to get through their matches.

I don't think Kohlschreiber will perform well. He is currently playing Kitzbuhl on clay. How Tha Bleepers, can this fella prepare properly for the Wimbledon grass?

maybe he feels he hasn't hit many balls and chose to practice on clay for olympics?

I don't know why he is playing on clay now, because the bounce on clay and grass is entirely different. Idiotic decision, IMHO. He should be practising on grass now!  :head-smack:

Federer is Mr. Popular at Olympics
By: Kylie MacLellan, ReutersUPDATED: Jul 26, 6:29p ET

SHARE
LONDON - Switzerland's Roger Federer has become so popular among both competitors and media that he finds it difficult to walk around the athletes village at the Olympic park, and has journalists gushing over him at press conferences.
Related to this article

The Swiss duo of Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka won the gold in men's doubles, giving Federer the Olympic medal that has eluded him since 2000.

The world number one and 17-time grand slam winner has stayed at the athletes village at two of the three Olympics he has attended, but at his fourth in London he will be staying nearer the tennis venue in Wimbledon.
While this is partly down to convenience - the Olympic park is around an hour's drive from Wimbledon - the 30-year-old admitted his fame had also been a consideration.
"I have done the village before so it is not like I feel I have to do the village so badly. I would love to, but of course I have also become very famous over the last eight years or so, so times have also changed and when I do move around in the village things are not as simple as they were," he told the packed 700-capacity main press room at the Olympic media centre.
While waiting for the number one seed to arrive, many journalists were using their phones and iPads to take pictures of the seemingly unnecessary "Roger Federer" name placard on the table where he was to sit. As he arrived, people strained over each other to get a picture of him entering the room.
In contrast, only around 50 people turned out to see second seed Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who won a bronze at the Beijing Games and was knocked off the world number one spot by Federer this month, when he held a press conference an hour earlier along with some of his countrymen.
SLIGHTLY BEMUSED
If seeming slightly bemused by his popularity among the world's media, Federer remained light hearted by his reception.
In response to one journalist, who began by saying "As a journalist and as a fan, I know that you will win this Olympic gold" before asking Federer if he would retire if he achieved that feat, he responded: "I don't know, are you my fan or not? If you don't want me to stop, I wont."
While when another member of the media who confessed to being a big fan "like so many other journalists" asked who was the biggest star of the games, Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps or Roger Federer he responded "Well, not me".
Federer, who won gold in the doubles at Beijing with Stanislas Wawrinka, said singles gold was far from a certainty, partly down to the fact that all but the final match will be best of three sets rather than the grand slam best five.
"That puts the margins more closer to each other," said Federer, who would have been out in the third round of Wimbledon under such rules, having gone two sets down to France's Julien Benneteau - his potential second round opponent at the Olympics.
"It just goes to show a bad five minutes or a bad couple of points can cost you the tournament, I am aware of that but I do believe winning Wimbledon three weeks ago is going to help me with my confidence," said Federer, who faces Colombia's Alejandro Falla in the first round.
Away from chasing the gold, Federer, who has become a father for the first time since the last Olympics, also has the important task of picking out a present or two for his twin daughters, who have just turned three.
"I will try to have a look and get some souvenirs," said Federer, who met his wife Mirka at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. "A good dad should bring back some souvenirs from time to time."

Just though it was interesting to see that over 700 journalist was there when Roger came in, while only 50 for Novak.  Novak needs to get his name out there more.

Oh...come on Alex....take a deep breath, relax, release....

How many post did we have to put up with you when Novak was on his 'high'?  :rofl_2:  You were really 'wild' on some of those post, but it was all fun and good, and I was really generally happy for you.  So...relax....breath.... it'll be ok.  Novak will still probably finish #1 at the end of the year and you can go back to being your old "Alex" again.

DALLAS -  whilst I acknowledge that Federer seems to be feted by the Press at the moment,  I am keenly aware of the often bizarre & petty attempts to minimise him not so long ago.   The same "gushers" that seemingly drool over Federer now, will no doubt put the boot into him if / when he plays less well than of late. The commentators / tennis media have been relentless (although not in the same league as EMMA of this board    :rofl_2:   )  in some quite bizarre & derogatory "articles" about him.

They love Nadal - falling over themselves to highlight his success &  readily making up excuses for him when he does less well.  Some of the drooling is near orgasmic when it comes to Nadal. It may well be the case that if Nadal had been here, he too would have had a huge press interest, and that his absence has meant that more attention is focused on Federer as the number one seed. Who knows the workings of the weird minds & "standards" of the bulk of the media.

But for some reason, Djokovic isn't as popular.  And actually, whilst I don't think Djokovic will lose sleep over it, it must rankle, given everything he has achieved, that there is a cooler attitude towards him.  He won't be blind to it, that's for sure.  He loves attention as much as anyone.  Actually, it is probably better for him to keep under the hype & quietly just go about his business.   He has enough on his plate with a tough draw.
Carpe Diem

i don't blame the journalists.........they have to feed the global sheep and most of the global sheep only know who wogie is and are interested only in what he has to say........just the casual dinner time viewers, not true sport lovers.......

this is why nadal is needed for this sport........they both would have shared the media equally as they have equal sheep and no other fanbase would then be pissed off or feel inferior.........

i say nadal would have dominated press being the defending olympic champion........his absence already being felt at the event........

Whether Nadal was there or not...Whether Roger had won Wimbledon or not... the guy is popular worldwide.  He still makes the most money; he still win the 'fans vote' year after year on the internet; he still gets the nod from players who 'want him to win' or who vote him best sportsmanship so many times, etc.  I don't think Roger had all those people there because Nadal isn't there.  I think they would have been there regardless.  Roger is just a very popular person (whether you like him or not) with the media, other players, other sports stars, etc.

But anyway.... back to tennis...
