let's share some of our memorable olympic moments.......i have a couple off the top of my head.......both from atlanta olympics in 1996 when i first really paid attention to olympics as a kid.......

1. leander paes somehow managing to win the bronze medal andcrying on the podium, the only medal for the country.......

2. a very short weight lifter standing less than 5 feet, halil mutlu of turkey winning a gold medal........he was the shortest at that competition so i remembered him........he went onto take golds in sydney and athens too........one of the only four weight lifters ever to win a gold at 3 separate editions........

I thought this was a pretty good idea. Anyone else care to share their Olympic memories?

i was out most of the day general MC. i heard about this when i got back.
 
no idea at all. what is going on there? stands should have been full. are people running off to the other venues? have they seen too much tennis lately with the 2 big slams back to back?

The empty seats are there because a fraction of the tickets is reserved for the officials and the sponsors.

E.g. Iran has 50+ officials and only 10 athletes that play no role of importance. So you have like 100 seats booked for an entire event, but after the early stages, when the Iranians are already eliminated, empty seats is what remains.

And obviously, most sponsors don't genuinely care about the OS, and surely can't be arsed to use their Canoe Slalom, Shooting, or Fencing free tickets.

sydney olympics in 2000........as usual india had just one medal in the competition thus far........a boxer named gurcharan singh got an unfair decision and lost in the QF to some european boxer........minimum a bronze medal would have been in the bag had he got the correct decision because both semifinal losers in boxing get bronze........

i remember watching that match, the commentators were saying that he clearly threw more no. of punches in the face but the judges got the counting wrong........

Were you affected by the blackout that happened in your country?

happy Uchimura won the men's all around in gymnasstics, he truly deserved a gold medal, pure talent,
tomorrow is the all around for the girls and then the big 2 apparatus events, women's floor exercise and men's rings.

The Americans are the Dominant force in Swimming.. Phelps, Lochte, Adrian etc.. What an array of stars.. My congratulations to the US team who have proven they are quality once more!
IMHO, the story of the Olympics so far, has been the performance of the French men's team, particularly Yannick Agnel.. The Americans could have been upset over the 'losses' to the French, but Phelps, with total class, gave credit to his opponent:

“I told him that I have seen a lot of great races and great performances -including Ian Thorpe’s- but that his 200m yesterday was probably one of the five best I have ever seen in the history of the sport.”

no the blackout happened in the northern india........a major power grid network got messed up or something........i live in south india........

I know the world is celebrating Michael's achievements, but I want to add my 2 pence worth - Go, Phelps! 20 Olympic medals and counting!! What an athlete!! The legend won the 200m Individual Medley for the 3rd consecutive Olympics - leading from start to finish! The Greatest.

translation: go into swimming if you want a lot of medals at the olympics. forget tennis. you will be lucky if you even get to smell a medal in tennis.

I had deep respect for Phelps. He really didnot need to swim here. He already is the best Olympian ever with 14 golds before London 2012. But of course the haters (there always will be people who is jealous) said that his total medal still lost to Larissa.

And so bogus is that. Cause he clearly win more gold than anybody else.

When he only swim fourth place in 400 IM, (his swimming is poor) and silver in 200 M butterlfy, I thought he will crumbled but he prove why he is the Olympian GOAT by winning the 4 x 200 M relay and of course the 200 IM.

Now, at least he will win 2 more medals to make it  total of 22 medals. I predict gold in 4 x 100 medley and gold or silver in 100 M butterfly.
