No need to worry yet. It's still a tropical storm (60 mph) just south east of the Florida keys), it could even turn north along the Florida west coast according to some models.  These gulf storms are notorious for stalling, changing direction, speeding up, etc.  It's still 2 or 3 days away from the northern gulf coast at current speed.

Respectfully,

Federer: Big Four maybe not best everPRINT THIS PAGE   Roger Federer counters comments made by John McEnroe and Andre Agassi that this is the toughest era in men's tennis, with the so-called Big Four of Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray winning almost every significant tournament.

“I'd say no, but I don't know,” Federer told reporters. “Just because you look back maybe 15 years, then you have Sampras, Edberg, Becker, and Agassi, I don't know who else. Those guys weren't good or what? You look back, further back, 20 years, and you have the Connors and the Lendls. Those weren't good either? I mean, I don't know.  So for me I think that's respectful.

It's just different times and definitely more athletic, there's no doubt about that. But then again we don't play doubles. We don't play mixed. Maybe we play less matches today because it's more taxing, but we do play less best of five set tennis than they used to play.

You can't compare really, but we have somewhat of a golden era right now. I feel that truly. It's nice to see Andy making his move at the Olympics, nice to see Novak having an absolutely ridiculous year last year, and then Rafa and myself still being around. It's definitely good times. Past that you still have great champions as well. It's very interesting at the top right now, and the depth I think has never been greater than right now. But then best ever? The four of us? That's a really difficult call.”

I think Federer is spot on General.  We can't compare the different eras. We have to respect each one for their own set of top players.  Federer has been around long enough to know.  Of course the media loves to hype that this is the best ever time, that so and so is GOAT.  But that's just silly. Too many things change, from equipment to surfaces to medical technology.

Back in the day, as Federer said, men were playing singles, doubles, sometimes 150-200 matches/year and best of 5 sets.  But perhaps they were doing it on more forgiving courts, mostly grass and clay and probably less depth in competition.   So he's totally right. You can't say this or that era is the toughest, but we may say that this particular era is good right now. Though I personally think there is a lack of excellent young players cracking through to the top level at the moment.

P.S. I replied to your PM.

Respectfully,
masterclass

general mc i may have to look this up but didnt vilas play something like 145 matches one year? and that was in addition to his davis cup duty.

i am sure guys like laver and emerson routinely went over 140 matches a year while having to play with tiny racquets with the sweet spot the size of an american dime.

also it was not long ago when the masters events were a little harder to win because of the best of 5 sets foremats in the finals.

general scott this is not exactly kent state but i had a lot of fun there. lots of parties, tennis, and so many football games. and the girls were dazzling.

and along the way i snatched up an MBA from there. and since i already had a masters in economics, i felt no need to go to all my classes. i skipped at leisure.

no signs of intensification but new computer models have at least one scenario where it will hit new orleans.

and that means we here on the gulf coast will get the worst of it. i better start making preparations to get out.

mississippi governor has alrady said that the people in the low lying areas better get ready to evacuate. people in some parishes in louisiana have started evacuating already.

it will probably end up being a cat II level storm which can still do tremendous damage.

no worries mate. it will be category II at best. also i will be long gone by the time it arrives here.

i think it lands late tuesday night or early wednesday morning. the track has shifted so it is probably going after new orleans.

Computer models for Isaac shift to the West again

Jay Vise / AP Reporting
Computer models predicting the future of Tropical Storm Isaac have shifted further to the west.

As the storm skirts the northern coast of Cuba, many computer models no longer call for a Florida landfall, and instead predict a landfall somewhere between Louisiana and Alabama.  However, the 10:00 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center still says that the most likely landfall that can be predicted right now is for the Panhandle of Florida on Wednesday morning.

WWL-TV Chief Meteorologist Carl Arredando says that forecasters with the NHC are likely awaiting data from overnight model runs before deciding whether to move the official track closer to Louisiana/Mississippi.

jim cantore is in new orleans already. he has become something of a  weather channel legend.

storms tend to follow him so this makes it near certain that the storm is aiming for new orleans.

that puts my area in the northeast quadrant. i will most likely have to pack up and head north either late tonight or very early in the morning.

there will be widespread flooding, high winds, power outages here. florida is reporting that nearly 49,000 homes are without power.

hancock county--where i live--is under voluntary evacuation at the moment but that could change by evening to mandatory evacuation.
