Western & Southern Open
« Reply #260 on: August 20, 2012, 10:27:36 AM »
2 things:

1. Roger played really well yesterday especially since this was his first hard court tournament since before the French - and  it was his first tournament since his loss at the Olympics.

2. Novak was probably mentally tired from not having a week off since the Olympics. Roger didn't play last week - Novak did. Its tough to keep that focus up week after week after week - not so much physically - but mentally. And it's tough trying to win Canada and Cincy back to back - hence only 3 people in history has done it. So Novak was under some stress.

Personally, I think the win helped Roger for the USOpen but I don't think it really hurt Novak at all. If Novak had lost that 2nd set in a blowout - then I would have thought differently. Novak played pretty good tennis in the 2nd set and with him winning Canada and getting to the final in Cincy - he's had sufficient preparation for the Open. I'm reading that the majority of the "experts" are still saying he (Novak) is the odds person to take the title - along with Murray. Unless things change, I'm seeing they are saying Roger is the 3rd choice - which is a little weird since he has won it 5 times before.

BABBLELOT - why would Djokovic donate games in the first set or tank it?

Fatigue, both mental and physical. Conserve energy for a 3 setter now that you're already down a double break to Roger Federer.

Conventional wisdom accounts for Murray's poor 1st set performances by labelling him a slow starter. What is this, a 100 meter dash? The dude gets down and lolligags through the first set then beats you in 3.

Nole didn't serve up his 4th DF at the end of the 1st set then "adjust" to Roger's aggressive style of play. He tanked the set at the end then determined to take the match the distance.

Remember Cincy champion has not won US Open since 2007.
Then we will fight in the shade.

Djokovic was ridicolous today. He seemed a piece of s**t on court.

 :hysterical:
Marian Vajda to Novak Djokovic, "I saw you beat that man like I never saw no man get beat before, and the man KEPT COMING AFTER YOU! Now we don't need no man like that in our lives."

i demand french open to be renamed RAFAEL GARROS

Back home safely in  8h 15m, 1000.8 miles round trip. It was a good return trip shorter and more ordered than the way out.  But I still find the Columbus mixmaster hard on the nerves. Now I'm looking forward to lifting a racquet again.

It was fun comparing notes with people on the forum. Thanks everyone!

Tanking it at the end of the first set is a plausible theory & in this context, I can understand your use of the word "donation",BABBLELOT.     Damage limitation could indeed be a strategy,  but he obviously would not have aimed to lose the set to begin with.  He was outplayed.

EUROKA! -  glad you're home safely & thanks too, for your company.

That's exactly what I meant, and Nole was outplayed in the way that Roger outplays me every week.

John, ummmm I mean euroka, I am sad I didn't get to hook up with you my friend but I am glad you had a great week of tennis.  Hopefully I will see you next year.
I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, "You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit." As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run. If you're flammible and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit.  - Mitch Hedberg
