Djokovic is just cruising, I don't even look at his early matches as they are just too routine.

It's amazing how many Federer fans seem ready with excuses for him to lose the US Open instead of pointing out his great play of late and the opportunity he (and others) have had with Nadal out of the picture..

Oh ye Federer fans of little faith and expression...

Did you not just see him do what most said could never be done, win another major and leapfrog the two top players in the world to regain the #1 ranking at age 30? His age is just a number, forget it. Forget about his golden gift to Murray. Forget about him temporarily relinquishing his throne at the US Open from 2009-2011 while he was focused on his young family. He has stormed into this year's US Open off a record 5th win in Cincinnati, demolishing his rivals. This is the US Open, where he won 5 straight times; nobody else around has ever won 2. So he knows how to deal with Super Saturday and he is arguably playing better now than he has at anytime since 2006-2007.

Federer's aura is very high right now compared to all other players. Have you not noticed their deference on and off the court to the true King of Hard Courts and Grass? Even the reigning King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, has graciously stepped aside for a time to pay respect to his great rival. Federer generously acknowledged this sacrifice with a personal mail to the Spaniard, wishing him further health and titles in the future.

It will take a very special performance to beat Mr. Federer in New York. Look at who is playing and their most recent performances on hard courts. Do you think anyone has it in them to beat him now?

Novak Djokovic is not the unbeatable usurper of 2011. He used up whatever magic was left in his egg in the 6 hour final in Australia with King Nadal. He looked in awe of Maestro Federer in Cincinnati. He's fortunate Federer wanted to give the fans their money's worth and permitted his level to drop after dishing out a bagel to the world #2 in the first set. Andy Murray, appeared to be still hungover from his Olympic Wimbledon win. A US Open semifinal is no guarantee for him, even with tired Jo-Wilfried Tsonga out. Murray could even lose to Jeremy Chardy again if they both make it that far. Anyone else? David Ferrer? 0-13? No chance. Tomas Berdych? He's mentally beaten before he steps on the court. Gentle Juan Martin Del Potro has the only chance if 100% healthy and he didn't seem to be in Cincinnati.

So career title #77 can very well come here, tying him for 3rd in the Open Era with John McEnroe, along with his 18th major, 7th title and 2nd major of the year. If he does win an Open Era record 6th US Open, on top of his other significant accomplishments this year, there is no doubt that this year will have to be ranked as one of his career's best years in light of his age and the level of his competition in their prime playing age. A win in Basel and a win at the World Tour Finals will only serve to crown this astonishing and almighty achievement.

Actually, I think it is general Shankar's and Nadal's fault. They have dominated many  weak Federer fans into submission.     So now when Nadal has essentially donated the rest of the season away with his foolishness in overplaying, some of those fans still don't believe their hero Federer can take advantage.

And Nadal actually did Federer another favor in beating Djokovic on clay all season, not to mention taking him to the limit at the Australian Open. All of these things must have diminished Nole's confidence enough to make him feel more vulnerable, plus whatever personal problems he might be having.

Fortunately for Federer, he did see all of this and kept his play stellar and consistent for the last 11 months to put himself in the position to take advantage of the unfolding events.  So now, only his fans have to believe.

gen mc, you are a classy fed fan unlike most lunatics who don't even believe in their player........i liked your post, your player just timed his move quite well and got to no.1.......

Well general, as you know, I'm a fan of great tennis, no matter who plays it. I try to observe and analyze from all points of view. The top guys have generally been playing great tennis for the last few years. It has sort of been nice that the order has changed back and forth somewhat every year for the last few years. 

Murray seems like he is almost ready to step into the picture, but he really needs a major to seal the deal. 

I'd like to see Del Potro have the confidence to get over the hump and get back to being in the top 4 or 5.  I think only his health is a barrier.  It wouldn't hurt his confidence to beat Federer again. He's played him pretty close this year in most matches, but just can't seem to get by him.

The others just don't seem to have the mental strength, consistency, or confidence to think they can beat the top guys, especially in the big events.  Tsonga had the French Open on his racquet and Nole on the ropes, but I think his belief cost him vs. Nole's belief.  Berdych has folded like a cheap tent when it counts. These guys have the talent and game, but a strong brain is also needed.
