Ferrer retired & is out of Beijing.  The man's work ethic is most admirable but he clearly needs a rest.  I wouldn't be surprised if this "niggle" started in Malaysia & led to his loss there.

I was surprised to see Cilic go out so soon,  but am pleased to see Dolgopolov and Gasquet  got through.

Djokovic needed 3 sets to get past the qualifier Berrer, but this was no doubt  rustiness after the break. I expect him to defend his title.

I see that Stosur is out to Goerges & that Robson has yet to take the world by storm!!

I really think that Shanghai Masters should be an interesting tournament, with Andy and Novak in top form, while Roger will be fresh after a much-needed break.  ;-()

Tsonga vs Djokovic should be an exhilarating final if the Frenchman retains his mojo.

No surprises in Beijing.   Congratulations to Djokovic for getting the job done.   He was required to do very little to dis-mantle Tsonga, who seemed intent on falling apart without much encouragement.   What an easy win and tournament  for Djokovic.   Those that readily harp on about “gifts” and “ getting lucky” seem strangely silent unless they can say so to insult Federer.

This easy tournament win for Djokovic provided him with good match practice going into Shanghai. Good for him.

The Bryans are adding to their phenomenal list of titles! Congratulations to them.

Novak Djokovic vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga | ATP BEIJING 2012 Final FULL MATCH

Top-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic beat Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6(4) 6-2 to win his third China Open tennis title in Beijing.

Djokovic dug deep in the first set after an early trade of breaks to win a close tie-breaker, with each player breaking once from four opportunities.
Tsonga fired down nine aces in all against Djokovic's one, but with seven of those coming in the opening stanza was unable to stop the world number two racing to a straight-sets win with two breaks of serve in the second.
Sunday's victory gave Djokovic, who also won the China Open in 2009 and 2010, his fourth title of the year.

Earlier, Mike Bryan overtook Australian Todd Woodbridge's mark of 83 career doubles titles when he, along with brother Bob, beat Carlos Berlocq and Denis Istomin 6-3 6-2 for their third China Open title in four years.
It was the seventh title of the year for the American pair.

Sharapova looks under siege in the final. She has yet to win a game in the 2nd set, having lost the frst set -3.    She looks stunning though!   :)

This write up on the  Bryans informs just how incredible they are:

CHINA OPEN 2012
Bryans Win Third Beijing Title In Four Years; Mike Breaks Woodbridge Record
Beijing, China

by ATP Staff
07.10.2012

Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan did not drop a set en route to winning their third China Open title in four years on Sunday.

The top seeds lost just eight points on serve to beat Carlos Berlocq and Denis Istomin 6-3, 6-2 in 57 minutes and add to their 2009-’10 crowns. It was their seventh title of the year (7-3 overall).

It was Mike Bryan's 84th career doubles title (84-45), an all-time record, over-taking Australian Todd Woodbridge's mark of 83 trophies. Bob Bryan is now 82-44 in tour-level finals.

"It's obviously an honour to hold this prestigious record," said Mike Bryan. "There are some incredible names towards the top of this list and it's humbling to be in such elite company. Huge props must go out to Todd Woodbridge, who epitomised class and excellence on and off the court."

The American twins improved to a 59-9 record on the season, earning $156,740 in prize money and 500 ATP Doubles Rankings points.

"It feels great to win again in Beijing," said Bob Bryan. "We love playing here and have created some really fond memories in this city. The facility is impressive, the hospitality is first class, and we always receive tremendous support from the fans."

Carlos Berlocq and Denis Istomin, who beat second seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor in the first round, split $70,720 and 300 points. The duo was an alternate pair, replacing Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet in the doubles draw.

Nice women's double win here too:

Makarova & Vesnina's Beijing Breakthrough

BEIJING, China - Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina resisted a second set surge and claimed their first WTA doubles title together on Saturday night, and it was a big one - the Premier Mandatory-level China Open in Beijing.

After an even start to the match, the No.3-seeded Makarova and Vesnina ran off seven straight games from 4-5 in the first set to build a 75 40 lead; No.5 seeds Nuria Llagostera Vives and Sania Mirza rebounded well, winning the next four games - losing just three points in those games combined - to even the set, 4-all, but Makarova and Vesnina re-rebounded and closed it out, 75 75.

"Doubles can be up and down, and with no-ad scoring and the deciding point it's tough to win every game," Makarova said afterwards. "When they came back from 4-0 it was a tough moment for us, but we came back and won it in the end, and we're just really happy we won the match and the tournament."

"This was such a strong tournament we weren't planning on winning the whole thing, we were just thinking match by match," Vesnina said. "We had both been to the doubles final here before so we really wanted to win it this time."

Vesnina finished runner-up in Beijing in 2006 with Anna Chakvetadze, while Makarova was a runner-up here in 2009 alongside Alla Kudryavtseva.

The Russians only just started playing together in May, making a splash in their first two events together, reaching finals at Rome and Madrid (losing both to Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci); now in Beijing, their first title together.

"This is a really big tournament for us," said Vesnina, the No.10-ranked doubles player in the world. "The facilities and courts are great and the people are very welcoming here. I think they have a great future here at the China Open."

Errani and Vinci were the No.1 seeds in Beijing but had to withdraw just before their opener after Errani suffered a thigh injury in her first singles match.

Sharapova managed to avoid a loss to zero games in the second set.  But to lose 6-3, 6-1 is an embarrassing loss.  Very well done to Azarenka for punishing that limp second serve of MS, and for serving & playing well, and lifting the title.

CHINA OPEN WTA BEIJING 2012 - FINAL - Victoria AZARENKA vs. Maria SHARAPOVA

Azarenka wins Beijing WTA final
8 Oct 2012, 1:01 am

World No.1 Victoria Azarenka has easily beaten No.2 Maria Sharapova in the China Open final, the last premier mandatory event of the WTA year.

World number one Victoria Azarenka thrashed second seed Maria Sharapova of Russia in straight sets on Sunday to win the WTA Tour's China Open.

The Belarusian dispatched Sharapova, ranked number two in the world, 6-3 6-1 in the final of the Beijing tournament - the last premier mandatory event of the women's calendar.

Azarenka, 23, sped to a 4-0 lead in the first set against the French Open champion, breaking her opponent's serve twice and holding her own on both occasions.

Sharapova, 25, won her first game in the fifth, before Australian Open champion Azarenka continued her 100 percent service game in the sixth.

The Russian responded by upping her serving and return shorts, winning two games in a row, but it was too little too late as Azarenka broke Sharapova in the final game to win the set 6-3 in 43 minutes.

Azarenka continued her momentum into the second set, again winning the first four games with ease.

The tennis star from Belarus then came from behind to hold her serve in a lengthy fifth game to make it 5-0 before Sharapova scraped a game, following an 18-shot rally.

With Azarenka serving for the match Sharapova had two break points at advantage but the Russian was unable to convert.

Azarenka then squandered a match point before finally taking the game and set to record a big win.

It was Azarenka's first China Open title in four attempts and her fifth tournament triumph of the season.

"I'm really happy to have a good result because I've been coming here the last four years," Azarenka said, praising the "incredible atmosphere" inside the capital's National Tennis Stadium.

Sharapova was full of praise for her opponent.

"Victoria played an amazing match today," she said. "There's a reason she is number one in the world right now."

Both finalists had made it to the last two without dropping a set and Azarenka is now 7-4 to the good against Sharapova in head-to-heads.

It was the sixth time the two had met in the final of a tournament and the fourth time this year. Azarenka has now won five and lost only one of their title deciders.

The China Open is one of four compulsory events, ranking behind only the Grand Slams and end-of-season WTA Championships in prestige.

Sharapova, a four-time Grand Slam winner, is yet to win a premier mandatory tournament.
