World No. 1 Roger Federer plays his first tournament since leading Switzerland in the Davis Cup play-offs. The 31 year old is chasing a record-breaking 22nd Masters 1000 title and 4th of the year.

World No. 2 Novak Djokovic returns to Shanghai after semi-final efforts in 2009 and 2010. The Serb recently reached the US Open final and is chasing his 13th Masters 1000 title.

US Open champion Andy Murray is looking for his third Shanghai Rolex Masters crown in a row. The Scot has an outside chance of finishing year-end World No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings and will look to boost his points total by winning his ninth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown and first of the season.

With 1000 South African Airways ATP Rankings available, Barclays ATP World Tour Finals hopefuls Tomas Berdych, Juan Martin del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will hope for strong showings this week.

Good stuff, Oracle 86.

The time difference with the Asian swing means I can't watch all the matches I want to, but it is good to have the full complement of those still competing here.

________________________________________________________________________________

In relation to tomorrow's schedule, I'm a tad miffed that 2 of my favourites are matched against each other, namely Cilic & Klizan.

And Hewitt is playing here as a wild card. How things change - he was once a GS champion & world number one.  I'm glad to see him competing.

I'm curious how the Dolgopolov / Tsonga pairing for doubles will work out.  Should be fun to see these two play doubles together.

Klizan has been doing really well of late! The same, however, can't be said about Brian Baker.

^^^ I agree, Oracle86, that Klizan has been doing well.  But he lost to Cilic today.  Cilic can play so beautifully, but seems allergic to consistency!!

Here are a couple of pieces from the ATP site, that I hought interesting:

SHANGHAI ROLEX MASTERS 2012
Djokovic Makes Securing World No. 1 Ranking An Objective; Praises Murray

Shanghai, China
by ATP Staff

09.10.2012

Novak Djokovic says that the goal of finishing No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings this year does not weigh heavily on his mind.

“[The] No. 1 of the world is a goal for me till the end of the year, [it is] definitely an objective [and] something I [will] try to achieve,” said Djokovic on Tuesday at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

“But it's not daily on my mind. I obviously try to focus on my day-to-day commitments that I have at the tournaments and every match that I play in. This [has been] my mindset always and was working well so far.”

Djokovic won his third straight China Open title in Beijing (d. Tsonga) on Sunday to further extend his lead over Roger Federer in the South African Airways ATP Rankings Race To London, with four weeks left in the regular ATP World Tour. Djokovic could return to World No. 1 next week if he wins the Shanghai title and Federer does not reach the quarter-finals.

Djokovic, Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have already qualified for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at The O2 in London from 5-12 November. Four singles berths remain up for grabs.

Ahead of his media conference, Djokovic practised with Murray, his long-time friend and rival, at the penultimate ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament of the season.

When asked whether Murray could go on and add to his US Open title triumph, Djokovic admitted, “I don't think it's good to predict anything because tennis is such a unique sport, individual sport. A lot of factors are involved. Obviously mentally it's a matter of staying strong, staying healthy physically, trying to perform your best on a regular basis.

“He won his first Grand Slam. He could have won it already a couple years ago. He's a quality player. He's [been] one of the best players in the world in the last five years, there's no question about it. He's been improving ever since he got to professional tennis. He definitely is a contender to win all the Grand Slams, there's no question about it.”

Djokovic, the second seed at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, will begin his campaign against Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in the second round on Wednesday.

 SHANGHAI ROLEX MASTERS 2012
Federer Aims To Finish Year At World No. 1; Ready For Shanghai Challenge
Shanghai, China
by ATP Staff |

07.10.2012

Roger Federer admitted at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Sunday that he hopes to finish the year at No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings.

“I hope I will finish World No. 1 at the end of the year,” said Federer, who is competing for the first time since the US Open. "For me it's about trying to play well here in Shanghai and go from there. If everything would have been totally focused on World No. 1, I would have gone to Tokyo or Beijing, most likely, and all those things.

"I've already reached my goal by getting back to World No. 1 in the summer. That was for me the goal, getting back there and winning a Grand Slam, particularly Wimbledon. I feel very much at peace and I'm happy. I always have to look 12 months ahead, as well, making sure I stay injury free, that I stay hungry for more. This is where if it works out, great, and if it doesn't, someone else plays better. I am here, so I'll give it the best shot I can and we'll see how it goes.”

Novak Djokovic has a 1,490 points lead over Federer in the South African Airways ATP Rankings Race To London. The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, the elite eight-man season-ending championship, will be held at The O2 in London from 5-12 November.

Federer also believes US Open champion Andy Murray – who is also bidding to capture a third straight Shanghai title this week – has a shot at becoming World No. 1 over the next 12 months.

“He's saying the right things,” said Federer. “He has results that back up his chances to become World No. 1, maybe even at the end of the year, maybe at the beginning of the next year. If not then, he's got a shot till next year's Wimbledon almost if he were to win there. His next nine months are going to be extremely interesting to follow.

“I think he's done so well, I said it right off the bat, his reaction was amazing right after not winning Wimbledon against me, then coming back and winning the Olympics, still battling it out through Toronto and Cincinnati, then bringing the victory home, his first Grand Slam, at the US Open. [I’m] very impressed, [it was] great to see. I hope for him he can achieve it eventually.”

This week, Federer is hoping to win a record 22nd ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown. The 2010 Shanghai runner-up is set to play Chinese wild card Ze Zhang or a qualifier in the second round.

“I love playing here in China,” he said. “I've had some amazing weeks here in my life. I do appreciate all the support I get here. I didn't want to miss it.  I really tried to keep my schedule as flexible as I could so I could come to Shanghai. I'm very relieved and happy now that I'm here. I want to play well and go deep into the tournament. The focus is clearly on the first round, making sure I find my way into the tournament first.”

Sorry to see Hewitt out already. The wily Stepanek sent him home in straight sets.  And poor Tomic got beaten in straights too, to zero  the send set by  Mayer!  My pair to watch - Dolgopolov / Tsonga went out!  Mine is obviously the kiss of death!   :rofl_2:    The Isner / Anderson match went to 3 sets, all tie breakers. A good contest, this.

Unlike last year, Nole doesn;t look like he'll be tiring out any time soon. And he has a 1490 points lead over Federer in the Race To London. Unless he loses early in Shanghai, Paris or London, he will be the yearend #1.

As many of the lower ranked players play an opponent  of  their level - I think, for example, of Gasquet going out to Stepanek in straight sets ( it was a nice match with some superb all court play) -  the likes of Federer plays Lu, Djokovic plays Dimitrov & Murray gets a walk/over!     :rofl_2:   These draws are hilarious.
Pleased to see Dolgopolov through, but sorry that Nishikori & Raonic are out. With Tomic already out, these young hopefuls seem to enjoy being spectators.

I see that the Bryans went out to Butorac / Petzshner.  With the amount of tennis they play & win, they probably need a good rest.

Anyway, here are today's results:

Stepanek    defeats    Gasquet    64 64
Federer    defeats       Lu    63 75

But Stan has beaten him before. Murray got a walk over so he's just now starting the tournament 4 days into it. He shouldn't have any problems with inconsistent Dolgopolov. Novak shouldn't have any problem with Lopez, who hasn't done much of anything This year. The remaining matches might be pretty good!
