One handed or double handed backhand??

Hi guys,

I am a beginner and would like to know whether it is better to learn the single handed or the double handed backhand.

I have played squash for a while so it is more intuitive for me to play it with one hand, but it also seems more difficult to hit the ball accurately...

What would you recommend?

Go with the double handed if you're planning to be playing good tennis anytime soon. One handed takes time to master and even at that the power you can generate will depend solely on your upper body / shoulder strength whereas hitting a regular backhand cross court with two hands is easier / more natural than hitting a forehand.

let me assure you there are a lot of advantages for a single hander........so if you really want to be a single hander, first hit slice backhands for a few months and then gradually try the drive.......

Single handed BH is better but more difficult. You need to build up your arm strength a lot more if you have a SHBH.

go with the stroke that revolutionized the sport:
 
go with the double hander. lot less variables to deal with and its lethal.

one hand is prettier shot but 2h BH is more effective.

I'm stuck with the one hander for this incarnation but think I'll switch next time around.  :innocent:

I should add that my backhand has improved in power and accuracy a lot ever since I have been maintaining balance by moving my left arm back as my racquet moves forward in the right hand during the stroke. It is doing so well that more than ever I would not want to change it now.  A good turn of course is essential and often saves the stroke if all else is wrong.

lemme guess, Haas again  :rofl_2:. yeah his one hand BH is freaking beautiful, same with Fed. still Nole rules when it comes to BH, just so efficient and ruthless.  :)

1. unlimited power
2. accuracy
3. disguise
4. lot fewer variable so very little can go wrong

Go with likes of Pete Samprass and Roger Federer and Justine Henin and Stan Wawrinka - one handed!  You have more flexibility in doing more types of shots - slice, drop, top-spin, drive and you can get to the ball faster with one handed and hit it back faster too.  Plus, you have more angle to hit with!

I play with a one hander but you have to go with what feels natural for you.  I always find it interesting that typically players with one handed backhands have better volleys.  Note that I said "typically".

I don't know about Scooter, but I don't plan on playing any of those guys! :scared:

Both strokes have their pros and cons.
I grew up in an era where only girls hit with 2 hands.
That being said, my H.S. dubs partner used both hands off both sides and could generate some serious pace.  East/west he was brutal but make him move north/south and he just fell apart.

I believe eventually we'll see a player that can utilize the advantages of both strokes during play.
