Federer did not play well today in general off the ground or return. His serve was keeping in the match, but let him down once in the first set.  Del Potro played a brilliant first set and put pressure on Federer to win the set. Federer picked up his game a bit in the second set, and played fairly well at the end in the tiebreaker, while Del Potro's level dipped. Here and there, Federer made some brilliant shots, but they were far and few between. Then in the 3rd, Federer had numerous chances to break, and couldn't. Del Potro gamely hung in there, though he wasn't playing as well as he did in the first set. In the tiebreaker, Federer totally went away after 2-2, making 5 unforced errors some on easy second serves. Worst tiebreak I've seen him play in a while.  Del Potro looked as surprised as everyone else at a couple of those Federer errors.

But anyway, Del Potro played a good tournament, so congrats to him for winning his 1st ATP 500 of the year and breaking the 7 game losing streak vs. Federer!!

Ferrer and Dolgopolov are tied 1 set a piece and 3-3 in the decider.

Respectfully,

Federer withdraws from Paris-Bercy:
Translated text from http://sport.ch.sportalsports.com/sportch/generated/article/tennis/2012/10/28/25089100000.html

Roger Federer cancelled his start at the Masters in Paris-Bercy next week after the final defeat of Basel. "It's too much for me, I want to prepare myself properly for the World Tour Finals," said the Swiss. He had some minor "aches and pains" and would therefore not like to take any chances.

"It was a last minute decision, I have already informed tournament director Guy Forget," continued Federer. "I'm disappointed that I can not compete. I would like to defend my title. Sorry for the fans."

"I always knew it would be close, if I were to play here (Basel) in the final. It is difficult for me, to play all three tournaments (Basel, Paris, London)  one after the other."

He will decide in his schedule about how he wants to approach this triple next year.

The Swiss is aware that this gives the tennis throne to Novak Djokovic. The number 1 at the end did not play a role in his decision. "I would have canceled even if I had won in Basel," clarifies Federer.

He'll give himself a few days break. "I will not practice immediately, I'll probably go back to the racquet on Thursday or Friday."

The decision to skip Paris, he had mainly in view of the World Tour Finals in London. "After a break, I am confident that I can play full out in London." The cancellation of Paris was the only right decision. (SMA)
