general MC: your take on the Fed match against the russian shrimp.

I thought they both played at a fairly high level for the first few games in the first set.
Looked like they were both trying to establish a foothold closest to the baseline and see who would blink first in the battle of half volleys from deep shots.  Davydenko blinked first and was broken.

After that, Davydenko only had sporadic moments of good play, though he served some bombs (130 mph is almost unbelievable from him), but he didn't do it enough to bother Federer.

After Federer established superiority in the match, he relaxed and didn't play consistently at a high level, but just did enough to break when it counted.  He was going for a lot of tough shots, quick strike tennis and didn't seem to worry if he was making more errors than usual.  My guess is that he didn't want to stay out in the 104 degree heat longer than necessary. His serve was on, something close to 70% on first serves and 60% of second serves won, and he didn't even face a break point the entire match.  That was enough.

Memo to Davydenko: it's difficult to win if you can't break.  Once Federer got on top of him, Davydenko looked at a loss mentally.  He couldn't figure a way to hurt Federer.  Well, I don't think he has enough weaponry to hurt Federer these days.  He is not as quick as he was, he was not able to get close enough inside the baseline to hit enough angles, and he can't keep up his running for as long as he used to.  He's simply aging faster from a playing standpoint than Federer is.

Anyway that's how I saw it.  Now Federer will play the youngster Tomic.  Tomic has shot off his mouth quite a bit... saying how much confidence he got from beating Djokovic a couple of weeks ago.  Memo to Tomic:  It was only an EXHIBITION.  Did Djokovic really care?  Anyway, Tomic does look a bit more fit and seems to be playing with more confidence, but hasn't really played any top player in a tour event this year.  I think at most he might take a set.  3 sets is more likely.  But who knows, maybe Federer will toy with him for awhile to keep the crowd entertained.
We'll see what happens.

hola general MC. i will check it out. :))

how are you feeling?

I'm ok.  Still coughing a bit, but not as often or as strong, thanks for asking.

Now I'm helping get kids to bed...  will be back later :)

Hey John, what up?You don't post at MTF anymore?

Hi Nikos, just recovering from this frelling whooping cough I caught near the end of the holidays while I was in the UK.
I post there rarely now.  I think it was about a month until I made a couple of posts recently.
The admins there totally ignored my requests to withdraw Generals Clay Death and Start Da Game from that inane contest they hold there.

I would rather post here more and help this forum grow.  Now that I'm feeling better, I'll post more here.

Thanks for asking.

Respectfully,

You really should do the bolded part if you have the time of course!
How do you like Fed's chances at AO this year, Sir John?

I also read a really funny comment today on my phone in general messages. Because Monfils was clowning (which he always does) there were some jokes in the thread, and now he has to play Simon. I believe this user called Sexybeast made a comment about that one, here it comes: " (posting a vid of that neverending rally between them on some clay court tournament) Why do we have to endure this, where is that German dude who stabbed Seles when you really need him ".

Okay this might be wishing injury to a player, and for Seles it was awful but I thought it was a funny joke. I came back this evening to check that thread again and now this poster is banned and the posts got deleted. How stupid is that?

Hey Sir Javier!

Federer has a good chance of course. He's second seed.  His draw may be tougher than the other top guys, but to me, that doesn't matter a lot.  I think he does better in the end when his draws are tougher early.

Djokovic's draw might be too easy for him and hurt him when he needs to step up his game and play someone like Murray or Federer.  But Djokovic likes the courts, they especially favor him at night as conditions usually slow when the important matches are played (semis, final) and he is able to retrieve shots that might have been winners in the day.  So unless he gets upset by some dark horse with a good variety skill set (power and finesse), he should make the final.

If Federer continues serving as he has, no breaks of his serve yet, I don't see anyone beating him till Murray perhaps.  But if his serve deserts him, he could obviously be in trouble.   Let's see who makes it to the semis and how they are playing :)  One match at a time, right?  He has to do battle with weekend at Bernie's Tomic next.
-----

I think those admins/mods have lost perspective and are full of themselves, don't listen or respond to reasonable advice, don't seem to want to discuss anything that threatens their superiority or agenda.   Well maybe they'll kill off that place, maybe not, but they won't last there forever...  I'm not really concerned about that place anymore.  There are still some good posters and people there, but I hope they come here :)

Hey Dylan, how is it going?

I'm probably going to get a bit of sleep now and wake up in less than 4 hours... uh I hope.. :)  I'll have my alarm set to watch the matches between 4 am and 6 am this morning.  I want to see the Almagro - Janowicz match,  Djokovic-Stepanek and then Querrey-Wawrinka.

Who do you all like in those matches?

I'm thinking....

Almagro in 5
Djokovic in 3
and.... Querrey and Wawrinka is a toss-up... It'll be at least in 4 sets!

I think that's a pretty fair assessment.
Jerzy Janowicz is the unknown quantity here for me.  If he plays his best tennis that I've seen him play, I don't think Almagro can stay with him.
However, if he plays like he did in the first couple of sets his last match, Almagro will hurt him.  So I'm not too sure about that match.
I'd like to see Janowicz pull off the upset.  He's beaten Murray, he's beaten Tipsarevic, and they are better players than Almagro. I think he's going to be the next big man in the top 10 if he stays healthy and can keep his emotions together.  We'll see :)

The only reason I think Almagro will take it, is that Janowicz hasn't been at his Paris level thus far. If he suddenly comes back, then he could very well take the match.

I agree, he'll be top 10 at some point :))

Yes. Very true Sir Dylan.

I was just looking at the Melbourne weather forecast.  Looks like a cold front is moving through.  Temp will be falling during the day - 75 F. at 8 am. 72 F.  at 2 pm. and 64 F by 8 pm.  Cloudy and chance of rain in the afternoon.

So cold temps in Melbourne today? Players will be happy, especially Djokovic.
Then we will fight in the shade.

Fo shizzle dizzle!

be sure you are back in time to watch the Nico battle.

Verdasco vs Anderson seems like a nice match as well, can't believe how easily Dasco dispatched of the X Man 2 days ago.
