Harrison hits the ball so short. Easy for Djokovic.

I was watching the wrong match:  :(
Should have been at Showcourt 2
Lacko - Tipsarevic now deep into a 5th set.

Babbelot will be in a "told you so" mode.  :\

I've had a very busy few days, which leaves me little time to watch the tennis. But just checking the results shows few surprises.  Federer meeting a Paire who seems to have disappeared in the 3rd set.  Davydenko will no doubt provide better competition.

Djokovic seems to have met slightly more resistance in his first round match than in this one, but he'll be pleased to ease into the tournament.

Lacko is looking better & better these last few months. To take Tipsarevic to five sets is a good performance. I think this was Tipsarevic's second five setter here - he'll need to conserve energy somehow.

I watched the Devraman / Janowicz match for the bulk of the first 3 sets & see that he turned it around to win.  Here's a potential hopeful making it to the 3rd round. Good for him.

Nice to see Nishikori through.  Stepanek continues to interest me - what a result to take Lopez out in straight sets.

And although Bautista Agut is out, I see he made a match of it which is more than an be said of some others.

Here are the results, but the list may not be complete:

Men's Second Round Scores: Day 3, 16th January

Novak Djokovic (1) defeated Ryan Harrison; 6-1, 6-2, 6-3

David Ferrer (4) defeated Tim Smyczek; 6-0, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3

Tomas Berdych (5) defeated Guillaume Rufin; 6-2, 6-2, 6-4

Janko Tipsarevic (8) defeated Lukas Lacko; 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5

Nicolas Almagro (10) defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver; 6-4, 6-1, 6-2

Stanislas Wawrinka (15) defeated Tobias Kamke; 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), retired

Kei Nishikori (16) defeated Carlos Berlocq; 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 6-1

Sam Querrey (20) defeated Brian Baker; 6-7 (2-7), 1-1, retired

Fernando Verdasco (22) defeated Xavier Malisse; 6-1, 6-3, 6-2

Evgeny Donskoy defeated Mikhail Youzhny (23); 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 3-6, 6-3

Jerzy Janowicz (24) defeated Somdev Devvarman; 6-7 (10-12), 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, 7-5

Jurgen Melzer (26) defeated Roberto Bautista Agut; 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-2

Marcos Baghdatis (28) defeated Tatsuma Ito; 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2

Radek Stepanek (31) defeated Feliciano Lopez; 6-2, 6-2, 6-4

Julien Benneteau (32) defeated Edouard Roger-Vasselin; 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5)

Kevin Anderson defeated Andrey Kuznetsov; 6-1, 7-5, 6-4

Djokovic, just brutal. I felt bad for Harrison who tried to mix it up, but was completely destroyed. I haven't seen Novak playing so well for a while. his ground strokes, ROS, FH ... oh boy, everything was just clicking. Harrison looked like a clueless chump out there.

guys, the only thing driving me crazy it's that I have to record everything because of that time difference between Canada and Australia.  :\

In all fairness, Alex, at 1.96 meters, 6 ft 4" is hardly little but, even waving my Australian flag, I'll go along with the brat.

Court assignment is all about money and filling the stands. Look at the US open and other tournaments over here. The Americans get the prime spots. I remember here in Washington that a few years ago Berdych was miffed because he was put on a small court but regular people didn't know much about him (still don't) and wouldn't have filled the big stand. I've noticed at Cincy that the night matches are more social events than tennis for the cognoscenti.  People spend much of the time talking.

I'm watching the brat (Tomic) right now.  I don't really care for him either. ..-) But looks like he might pull through since he's up 2-sets to 1.

I'm concerned about Roger's match tonight.  He has had trouble with Davydenko in the past... so I hope he can get by tonight.  (It'll be around 2:00 am  -- or 3:00 am - I'll have to check - my time when this match comes on.  I will have to set my clock to get up.)

Tomic-Brands played an outstanding 4th set TB. But 5th set? Oh no, play it out. This Duckworth match is a farce now...

I cannot believe Federer is playing Davydenko in the 2nd round..  :scared:  This is a tough draw.. It is significant that the Federer v. Davydenko match is being played at night.. Playing at night will give Davydenko some respite from the brutal heat.. With both players pretty much in the same age bracket, their respective fitness levels will come in to play.. Also, the start will influence the match to a large extent..  If neither imposes himself early, this could well turn into a slug-fest.. Best of luck to both.. C'mon, Roger!! :))
