Why do Aussies, even the commentators, insist on calling Bernie, 'Tomi(k)' instead of 'Tomi(ch)'.. As a result, the cheerleaders carry on calling him 'Tomi(k)', although it is convenient as far as their cheer is concerned.. Anyways, Bernie has announced himself.. With his heavy weaponry, I would be disappointed if he does not crack the Top 25 this season.. Looking to see how he does on the hard courts..

Down to one point?? Look.. You have to hand it to him... He does have some nerve... Hehehe, he just got schooled... Although he did play well and I think he is probably top ten material... But no chance vs the top 4... He may be pretty pretentious but it's good to have a personality like his in tennis...

It turns out they were told to  ! All part of the general family Australianization. I needed to be corrected too. There was a Chilean politician by that name who used the correct national pronounciation when I was there some years ago and that is how I used to say it.

I thought Tomic put up a very good fight today. Federer, as he admitted, was obliged to bring out his best game and he surely did.

Come to think of it, this is classic Aussie 'fighting' talk.. They never take a step back and are always gung-ho, even in defeat.. I guess he was stretching there, referring to the difference between defeat and victory as '1 point'.. 
Bernie's young, he will learn from these defeats and improve. Still, he seems a decent enough lad, with top potential.. I wish him the best.. I hope he turns out like Nole - a Champion at peace with himself..

Curious, how during the Simon-Monfils match, an expert was saying how Simon, with his defensive, retrieving style, had caused Murray problems in the past.. This should not prove true the case this time.. If Muzza plays big, this will be short and swift... I cannot see Simon recover from his marathon against Monfils to drag Muzza into a sloth-fight [cannot help it, Simon puts me to sleep with his stroke-making]!!

I managed to watch some of the tennis. Del Potro / Chardy was riveting stuff.  JC timing the ball superbly, dealing with the D-P forehand cooly & often with his beautiful single handed backhand.   D-P finding a reason to stay on court & taking the next two sets.  But it was JC’s day, and he finished it off in style. 
Federer looked in superb form, notwithstanding the poor break point conversion rate. Some classic tennis from him, especially under pressure from Tomic’s gutsy & incisive play.  I don’t care about the hype & the youngster’s penchant for idiotic comments. He can play excellent tennis, is growing in self belief & dispatched his end of the bargain with considerable aplomb in the first 2 sets.   That said, it must be acknowledged that Federer should have converted some of numerous break points in the 2nd set & avoided the TB, which he won by the finest of margins.
I like Berankis’s game & he played a good match against Murray. Murray looked unsettled at times, despite never being under threat, for some reason, but another excellent win as he remains on course for the business end of the event.
Gasquet looked as though he wanted to be elsewhere in the first set & seemed incapable of picking up a rhythm against Dodig.  Redeeming himself in the second set, he gained momentum as the match went on.  Good for him to get through.
As for Simon, apparently he could hardly walk back after the match.  Quite what he expects to put up against Murray is unclear, but I expect it to be another 3 sets win for Murray, if indeed Simon plays at all.  Raonic on the other hand, will be a handful for Federer and I’m picking that match as the one to watch.   I find Seppi uninspiring & whilst he deserves congratulations for the win, I was sorry that Cilic couldn’t get past him.  Tsonga was the expected winner in his match, and good for him to live up to the expectation.

All 4 matches could be intriguing depending – as ever – on how they play.  Other than Djokovic, I can’t decide who’ll prevail.   If Wawrinka turns up with a modicum of self belief, he could win a set, but I am expecting Djokovic to win it in straight sets.
Whilst I’m expecting  Ferrer to beat Nishikori,  it may go to the wire if KN is focused & committed enough.  On the basis of sheer persistence,  I think DF will win it.
The  Almagro / Tipsarevic match could be a well contested one, and if JT is not too tired after his string of 5 setters,  ought to be an entertaining match.   
Anderson / Berdych ought to be a straight sets win for TB, but I’m not sure about him at the moment.  If KA plays well, it could be a long match.

Alex, you are being unfair again. Everyone has the right to decide what they want to be called. It is quite common for immigrants to change the pronounciation of their name or even their name so that they fit in better into their new country. The Asians do this all the time for obvious reasons. As mentioned above, in other countries some of the Tomics keep to the old home pronounciation.

I had quite forgotten, until reminded by Federer, that the two had played at Cincy last year and that I must have seen them. That alone shows me that Tomic has improved his game a lot. The sort of encounter we saw today, I certainly would have remembered.

I thought that Tomic was serving very well. Maybe not a monster serve, but powerful and accurate. If it had been impeccably consistent, he might have had a chance. It was better than Federer's but Tomic came nowhere near competing once the ball got into play. As the lady next to me said, "Federer must have been a ballet dancer in his previous incarnation". It was wonderful to watch. In short, I thought Tomic did very well considering and that he has a bright future if he can keep this up. The crowd was very pro-Federer. My own feeble attempt at flag-flying sounded more like one-hand clapping  .
