What the hell is this : Sharapova has played 4 sets and is yet to lose a game . . . the WTA is a waste of resources !! And Sharapova will be beaten by someone else 6-0... Just total bulls**t !!

Cornet's racquet is so big that it looks ridiculous in her hand.

I had a hunch that Stosur would go out to Zheng.  Good for V.Willias to get through. She seems to be feeling better & to enjoying the challenge again.  I can't remember what she did at the USO or even if she played it, but I saw her at Wimbledon & she looked unsettled & as though she'd prefer to be elsewhere.

It's nice to see Heather Watson through!   :)

This list of results may not be complete:

Marion Bartoli (11) defeated Vesna Dolonc; 7-5, 6-0

Ana Ivanovic (13) defeated Yung-Jan Chan; 7-5, 1-6, 6-4

EUROKA1 - I liked your observation on the women posted in the Men's AO thread - I thought I'd bring it here to comment on.

It was good to wake up in time to see the second set of Venus vs Cornet. I enjoy watching Venus much more than Serena. She has a style and movement that the other does not have and I'm glad she won. I look forward to the match against Maria S, which will also be a sight for the ageing eyes.

.

You reflect my thoughts in all you say here.  I much prefer V. Williams game to that of Serena. Her attitude & demeanour too.  I find the waxing lyrical over Serena whilst complaining about the attitude & behaviour of other players  somewhat perplexing.
And Sharapova is indeed beautiful. The volume has to be turned off when she plays, though!

What a result!  11-9 in the 3rd!  Both she & Watson through to round 3.  Excellent effort.
As for the higher seeds, much as expected.

Not much of a fan of hers yet.  But she's still young.  She has a lot of 'growing' to do, but she has potential.

The hype around Sharapova-Venus is ridiculous. Sharapova will win in straights in 1:12.

yeah, i thought Shrieks would win 6/3, 6/2. I was sort of close. I give mad props to Venus playing with her disease (and being in great form no less) but that disease is a beyotch. And Shrieks moves really well for the last 2-3 years.

Sharapova was fantastic today. I think the two favorites to won the title are: Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.

I thought so, too. I watched the second set from a hotel room in New York and I thought for a while that Venus might come back. Sorry in a way. I really like her style.  Needed to keep the volume control waaaaay down to ensure that security didn't come to the room to see what was up.  :scared:

Heather Watson been beat  :(  in the women's we still have Laura Robson to pull for.

Pity about Watson. But Radwanska was clearly too good for her. This was the only match I saw, with bits of the Kerber / Keys.    I hope Robson keeps focused - she plays Stevens next.  I'd like to see her take SS out.  We could have fisticuffs with Babblelot & Dallas!    :Sword Fight:        :))

Sharapova -v- V. Williams was expected, given the latter's more recent form, but the result surprised me.

I see Date-Krumm is still there!

The results for day 5 18th January:

Maria Sharapova (2) defeated Venus Williams (25); 6-1, 6-3

Agnieszka Radwanska (4) defeated Heather Watson; 6-3, 6-1

Angelique Kerber (5) defeated Madison Keys; 6-2, 7-5

Li Na (6) defeated Sorana Cirstea (27); 6-4, 6-1

Ekaterina Makarova (19) defeated Marion Bartoli (11); 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4

Ana Ivanovic (13) defeated Jelena Jankovic (22); 7-5, 6-3

Julia Goerges (18) defeated Zheng Jie; 6-3, 1-6, 7-5

Kirsten Flipkens defeated Valeria Savinykh; 6-2, 4-6, 6-3
