patrick rafter is correct. he won the u.s. open.

the second one is from the same country as radek stepanek. he was 6 foot 4 and had one hell of  a backhand. he used to own johnny mac if i remember reading correctly. general markus may have to confirm that for us or i will eventually look it up.

he was so damed fast for a big guy that they used to call him the "big cat".

Miroslav Mecir it is  :))

isn't his son playing tennis too?

that dude next to vilas should be in tears or something. he got 2-3 games total in the 1977 french open final against vilas.

spot on generalito. :)) :))

vilas is right. the other one is brian gottfried. very hard to know that one unless you happen to remember some of the tennis history.

i will have to start reading again since i am forgetting it as fast as i read it. gottfried was basically a doubles specialist but he worked so damned hard on his game that he managed to make the final of RG.

he played doubles with raul ramirez of mexico. they were ranked pretty high like in the top 5 but i forget the exact rank.

ramirez must have been a talented mexiacn as he was ranked in the top 5 in the world both in singles and doubles.

he went on to marry  miss universe and his game instantly disappeared.

4 of the top 5 players---current player--- carry 35 slams between them.

this has been done before.

True or False?

negative.
35 slams among the top 4 current players previously in some other era? impossible.

you might as well make that number 38 now for this year and 42 for next year.

i was just asking if there had ever been an era when there were 4 players in the top 5 who carried 35 slams between them.

and the answer is false. no other era has even come close.

What's the highest?
I didn't really use any logic for my answer, I just thought it'd be too obscure a number to make up.

that is the best that has ever been.

some people are saying that this era is the greatest ever with 3 players that can be considered among the greatest ever.

that has never happened before. no era has ever produced 3 all time greats at the same time that had as many slams as these 3 do.

nole is going to probably make a run past nadal and then go for roger`s record if he can stay healthy and motivated.

I am slightly handicapped here by not being able to see the pictures....as for Mecir, he is not from Stepanek's country. Mecir is Slovak, Stepanek Czech. But it is true they were countrymen when the former was active. I remember Mecir beating McEnroe on at least a couple of occasions, but must admit their total H2H is unknown to me.

you mean the pictures don't appear to you?

Mecir is from 1964 and Steps is from 1978, in those years they were born there was still Czechoslovakia so they are from the same country  :)) Also, Mecir lives in Prague for a couple of years already. Mecir never won a slam right?

1986 u.s. open final:  lendl defeated mecir 6-4, 6-2, 6-0.
so not a good day for mecir on that day. i am checking the scores now.

lendl got hold of mecir like a damn bulldog at the australian open final in 1989 and would notmlet go and again coughed up just 6 games:

the score: 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

I'm getting a "403 - something something forbidden" message instead of pictures. Still am. Makes it even more difficult than usual to guess. Not that I've had much luck with the images I was able to see....

Mecir never won a slam, no.
