hola general masterclass. what is your take on the roger match last night? :))

Fed bounces BernardSaturday, 19 January, 2013
By Alexandra Willis

Purple shirts, pink laces, casual gear and stripy haircuts. These were merely incidental observations on a night that ended in another lesson dealt by Roger Federer.
The 31-year-old world No.2 continues to look as unruffled by life as ever, making his way into the 35th second week of his 53rd consecutive Grand Slam with a 6-4 7-6(5) 6-1 over Bernard Tomic in the third round, his 250th major match win.
The only hint of Federer’s age and stage of his career was the white thermal vest he treated the crowd to a view of, presumably one of the ways in which he protects his sometimes troublesome back. Especially in the cooler temperatures of a night match.
But other than that, Federer was the Swiss supremo of old, the level of his tennis as good as it as ever been as he cast his habitual spell over Melbourne’s centre court.
“Obviously, the result is something I was hoping for, but not sure going into it,” Federer said. “So I’m just really pleased that the outcome is what I was hoping for. I thought I played really good today.”
Tomic had talked a good talk in the build up to this match. The Australian youngster had hit form just in time to try and do better than the eight games he got against Federer this time last year.
“He is the greatest our sport’s ever had,” Tomic said. “You learn something every

awesome shotmaking from roger last night general MC. thanks for posting this video.

some people are saying that he is playing as good as ever. some of those shots were unbelievable.

here is what i saw:

1. solid movement
2. great backhand
3. lethal forehand
3. relatively good return of serve

so he is doing his thing and tomic was never going to stand a chance.

Federer 46 winners 20 unforced errors - 26 of 30 at the net.

Tomic was a bit nervous serving in the first game and got broken, which was enough for Federer to take the set as he was flawless on his own serve.

Second set was quite exciting and close, with Federer having break points in almost every Tomic service game but he couldn't break because mostly because Tomic served clutch when *break* points down, though Federer also played a couple of weak returns on a couple of second serve chances he had.  Again, Federer's serving was impeccable, so it went to a tiebreak, where Tomic started well, ahead a mini-break at 4-1 and at 5-3.  But Federer really stepped it up, especially defensively, and Tomic got impatient in the rallies and Federer seized his chances and came back to take the tiebreaker 7-5.

That was pretty much it.  Federer broke twice more in the third set as Tomic gave way and got breadsticked, 6-1.

It was a cool evening (starting around 69 F. or so), and as the night wore on Federer had to go to wearing the undergarment to keep his back from stiffening up.  But he got it done.  Tomic is improved from last year, and played much more aggressively (even a tad reckless at times) but he is still not good enough with Federer playing well. Even if he would have snatched the second set, I think Federer would have taken the next two anyway as Tomic looked tired.

Raonic up next for Federer.   Federer still hasn't been broken.  If he continues like this, I think he'll beat Raonic in no worse than 4 sets.  Raonic has given Federer a tough battle all 3 times he has played him, but Federer has always come out on top with a lot of tiebreakers.
For Raonic to win, I can't see him breaking Federer.  I think he'll have to take 3 tiebreakers - possible, but a very tall order.

That's how I saw it...  And yes, as General Hercules says, Tomic still has to improve his movement somehow to be a threat to the top tier of players.

Respectfully,
masterclass

good analysis. you cant win if you cant break.

and roger is almost always in their service games. he gets the ball back and gets into the point.

and on the forehand wing side, he just abuses their serves. so he keeps up the pressure on their service games as well.

the courts are faster this year.

Affirmative General Hercules.   And I still can't believe the announcer used your nickname for Federer in that video I just posted - "Silent Assassin"

You came up with that tag at least a year ago...
