Nole would have gotten crucified by Fedfans for this last year!

Unlikely tennis happenings in 2013

Rafael Nadal Of all the tournaments Rafael Nadal could have made his return at, the VTR Open in the Chilean resort town of Vina del Mar is one of the least likely, based on the Spaniard's scheduling history.

Roger Federer Roger Federer plays Newport: This is the grass-court equivalent of Rafa's visit to Vina del Mar. The Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, RI is one of just six grass-court tournaments on the ATP calendar, but it's the only one held after Wimbledon. As such, Newport rarely boasts a strong field, contested mostly by Americans and players outside the Top 10 who didn't fare well at the All England Club.

 :rofl_2: :rofl_2: :rofl_2: :rofl_2:
-----------------------------------------
Last year, Fedfans overlooked the fact that Roger's margin of #1 was due to playing Rotterdam last year, a crap tournament he hadn't played in 7 years!!! After Fed reached #1, I made up a story  :innocent: about Djokovic playing Bastad, and Fedfans crapped themselves :crying: that it would be a travesty for Djokovic to chase cheap points just to regain the #1 spot.

 :rofl_2: :rofl_2:
-----------------------------------------
The Williams sisters play Indian Wells  :scared: :swoon: For an entirely different reason, it's unlikely that we'll see Venus Williams and Serena Williams playing at the BNP Paribas Open. Joel Drucker does an excellent job of recapping the controversy here. Essentially, neither sister has played Indian Wells since 2001, when Venus pulled out of a semifinal with Serena just four minutes before their match.

The Davis Cup comes to Forest Hills: This takes wishful thinking to an entirely new level. The West Side Tennis Club -- colloquially referred to as Forest Hills -- has seen far better days from a pro tennis standpoint. (As a club for recreational players, it's still lovely.)

Hunting, love your sig btw. I assume General Herc created it. Herc has many hidden talents  :)

Babs, I get your point ... Novak could've played one more tournament and Fed would've never overtaken #1 ... but whatever  :). Nole is very giving  :)) ...

Babs, I get your point, but we really still don't know what's happening with Rafa.

Man, I wasn't sure if hunting whiffed on this --  :)>>>> is often a signature stamp for Rafa fans because they are famous for spilling the blood of others -- but I guess "Rafa" > Federer/Fedfans (L :shocking: :shocking: K at the title of the thread, people!!! And if you missed that, there's no excuse for missing my comments).

Rafa playing Chile is only an oddity but not remarkable in that he's using it as many (e.g., Agassi) use challenger events during their comebacks from injury.

The Williams Sisters playing IW is HUGE news! If you don't know why, nevermind...

DC going to Forrest Hills is a nice story.

Pay attention, fellas, because here comes the  :rofl_2: :rofl_2: You guys missed it the first time!
 :;:-|

Federer playing Newport is  :paper bag: worthy, just like your (collective) inability to find the punchline, here.

Dum-basses...

Well, it's true... Federer did play Rotterdam and gave him the chance to regain his #1 spot for a while.. He was gunning to take the #1 spot at least a while to break the record.. But my guess on Djokovic was not that he was so generous, I think his mindset at the time was somewhere else: To challenge RG and prepare as hard as he could.. Unfortunately Rafa was determined to win RG again.. I think Djokovic is doing things the right way, and not caring about droping to #2 at the time and manage his schedule in a smarter way... Roger didn't have anything to lose, since he is an old guy on tour and had targeted a goal he accomplished.. Djokovic knew it was just a matter of time before regaining his top #1 spot so why jeopardize his season by entering a minor tournament and putting pressure on his body unnecessarily, that's the way I see it :))

That's not entirely correct, you know. Of course, he could have postponed Fed's ascent to #1 this way, but not prevented it altogether. Remember Fed was 1335 points ahead after the US Open. That's not something that could have been made up easily by playing more. Still, good enough for a piece of fun, I guess, seeing as many remember the minimalistic 75 points difference at the outset of Fed's latest #1 stretch.

Thanks for setting the record straight.

Fed wanted the #1 and took it.
An amazing feat as so many never thought he had enough left to do it.
He sat the bar at over 300 weeks for Nadal and Djokovic to shoot for, good luck fella's.
