In 2009, the Australian Open discussion thread was 45 pages. In 2013, it's only 44. I claim it's proof that Nole, Rafa, and Murray are boring tennis fandom to tears with their brainless game of attrition. But you say, "WTF??? 1 page? You're basing this on the mere fact that in 2009 the discussion thread was a measly 1 page longer? WTF are you  and pass some to me!" Well, let's take a look inside the numbers. For the three years 2009, 2010, and 2011, the discussion threads were 45, 48, and 41 pages, respectively. But here's the catch: those were WTA discussion threads!

   

Yeah! here are the length of ATP and WTA Australian Open discussion threads by year.

2009 ATP 317 pages/WTA 45 pages
2010 ATP 86 pages/WTA 48 pages
2011 ATP 73 pages/WTA 41 pages
2012 ATP 74 pages/WTA 14 pages
2013 ATP 44 pages/WTA 12 pages

Nole and Murray have driven the ATP discussion threads down to truly WTA proportions!!

I think other "media" types have taken away some of the post that we use to have.  For instance, Chris (who use to post regularly here), still post a lot about tennis but on Facebook.  Some use Twitter, etc. so it's a lot more competition in the cyber-world now than it was even 4 years ago.

we lost some good members who used to post a lot.  I used to post much more during matches, but decided not to any more because I lose my focus.

Tell me who can generate the interest? you may not like it but Djokovic and Murray are currently the strongest guys on the tour with Fed, of course. not sure about Nadal  because he hasn't played in ages. Do you want to turn back time and watch Fed/Rafa in all finals? what do you want?

Individually, I like Nole and Murray and enjoy watching them. Different story when they face one another.

Don't knock Fognini, he's the Marat Safin of court 7. You should see this guy play some time. He's a fan favorite.

I get your point about Nole and Murray  btw. it's a strange match up, but what to do? they win their matches, they meet in finals ... I wish that Nole was more aggressive when he plays Murray but it is what it is ... too much pushing and grinding from both of them ... it might something to do with their friendship and mutual respect, hard to say

Really?! Like, seriously?! Amount of pages on one internet forum prove how much people enjoy finals between certain players?! That's the indication?!

 

Here's REAL proof:

In 2010, Australian Open hit record attendance with 653,860
In 2012, that record was broken with 686,006.
In 2013, not much less with 684,457.

Let's see, the last time neither Nole, Rafa, and Murray all didn't play was 2003. What was the attendance for 2003? 512,225. Yeah, notice how much smaller that is? And we can compare single matches, too, so that you can't try to claim it was the park's growth's fault.

2013 final (Djokovic vs. Murray) attendance: 25,061.

Before 2008, the highest attendance was 19,273 in 2005. In 2008, when Djokovic played, it was 21, 259. Unfortunately, I can't find the numbers for the finals in '09, 2010, 2011, or 2012. But those three numbers prove it. You might not like matches between Nadal, Murray, and/or Djokovic. But everyone else does. You can't deny that. Get over it.

Many factors go into attendance numbers. If you don't know what those could possibly be, you can't interpret them meaningfully.

It's like saying, "Median household income doubled from 2011 to 2012."

I also claim there's a lag in attendance numbers. People show up for Federer only after he's won several titles, not when he turned pro or won just a few. The lag works in reverse, as well.

There's no magic between Nole and Murray. Roger won't be here to carry the dead weight, Rafa will be in a wheelchair, and you'll be named "Muzzer714" or simply watching your favorite football team with the rest of the fanboys.

*if 2011 > 2010, could you explain it? I can. You need to be aware of other variables in order to explain movements. I think 2011 was up from 2010, but regardless, 2012 is down from 2010 and significantly down from 2009.

So, based on USO numbers, (1) you've demonstrated nothing with your AO numbers, and (2) what I've hypothesized above is already evident.

And I learned all I need to know by watching the T4U thread page counts drop over this same span.
