My prediction had been a straight sets win by Nadal.   
But Zeballos clearly had other ideas. He broke Nadal to love in that game to win it 6-4.  I don't know much about Zeballos, but I thought it interesting that he was unseeded & made it to the final. A romantic story of unseeded player versus the Maestro of Clay.  And it was indeed a romantic story.  The underdog made good.  What a match & what a tournament he has had. Very well done to keep his nerve.

This is Nadal's first step back from months away. He would no doubt have preferred to win the title, but I'm sure he'll be happy to have got some matches under his belt here, and will have learnt from how he is playing.  The Brasil Open next.  Lets see what happens there.

well Lit, 7/8 months, it's been so long ... it doesn't really matter. btw, love your avi. I just love chipmunks. I used to go to Kananaskis with a friend of mine. We both love camping. There were so many of those little buggers and they are the cutest things ever. One night we left an unopened bag of peanuts on the bench in front of our tent. Next morning, we woke up and little buggers managed to open the peanut bag and eat all the peanuts. It was so funny  :)

Did Rafa play too much tennis? He's in the doubles final, too. It looked like Zaballos was hitting his FH twice as hard as Rafa's at times today.

Expected result. Zeballos played brilliant, congrats to him  :)) He probably had a confidence boost after conquering Warlocq.

Rafa remains a mediocre player- basically a speedy guy with a loopy forehand. Well, he hasn't played for 7 months, so I guess he'll improve.

Had he won, folks would say "well, he didn't really face any top players". Now that he lost - people are saying "we'll, he has been out for months so he's rusty". Lol

That much time off has to be tough mentally.  Give him a few more tournaments and let's see what happens.  He will only get better.

I know it doesn't much matter, but I'm a numbers guy and it annoys me a little. Not that I blame you, you're not the one who started this trend.

You call this a chipmunk? Interesting. I though it would be a squirrel. I'm not an expert on animal names in English, though, and I have no idea if they differ in UK, US and Canada. In Norway this is an "ekorn". I just love those little critters :) Always makes my day if I see one when out walking/running. Last summer I even got a pair of them, courting...flying up and down tree trunks. Great show  :))

We'll see how Nadal does in the next 4-5 events before rendering any judgement. Ultimately it comes down to Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome & Roland Garros.

Still thought he'd win this tournament, which he normally would have playing far below his best, but Zeballos was really in the zone yesterday.

It will be interesting to follow both in the remainder of the clay season. Hope Zeballos can play some more good tennis.

Agree your take on this, Litotes.   Zeballos played a quite superb match & with conviction. But it would be hasty to generalise Nadal's form or question his abilities from this result.

I'll be keeping an eye on Zeballos from now on - I too hope he can show us more of the same looking forward.  He plays in the Brasil Open this week, so we won't have long to wait to see him. 

I note that Nadal / Monaco lost the doubles finals in straight sets to Lorenzi / Starace. .

By the way, your avatar looks like a red squirrel to me - beautiful creature.    :)

Even though Nadal had been out for a while, this still was NOT an expected result.  Nadal had what - 36 career titles on clay, and his opponent has only 20 something WINS on clay in his career.  So to say that this was an 'expected' result?   :rofl_2:  Maybe you need to play the lottery if you expected this, particularly after Nadal had won the first set.

But anyway.  The good news is that Nadal made the final in both single's and double's.  The bad news - he lost both.
