Hey, I thought you all might like this video I found of the Roland Garros final of 1978 between Bjorn Borg and Guillermo Vilas.  Recall that Borg couldn't play RG in 1977 because of the stupid WTT (World Team Tennis) contract restriction and the French organizers, and Vilas took the title that year.  Now we come to the following year and they faced off against each other...recall that they played with wooden racquets in those days. Vilas with his Head Vilas and Borg with his Donnay only around 65 sq in head. (Federer uses a 90 sq. in., Djokovic 98 sq in. and Nadal 100 sq in. modern graphite composites)

One point in the match lasted 86 strokes.  You had to have real patience on clay in those days.  video quality is not too bad... :)

Respectfully,
masterclass

I have this one on dvd, Borg clearly the better player in this match ..

Yes, well he dominated the tournament that year like no other.  He didn't lose a set, and lost only something like 32 games the whole tournament in 7 matches.  I think Roscoe Tanner with his big serve took 12 by himself. So that means that in 6 other matches Borg averaged a little over 3 games lost per match.

Respectfully,
masterclass

general masterclass that is just a staggering number of clay titles for those 5.

46-47 for vilas alone. nadal is sitting on at least 37. borg, roger,  and muster racked up a lot of clay titles as well.

i have no idea how many clay titles lendl and bruguera had.

As a FedFan I think Kuerten deserves to be here more than Roger.

I mean, something's true, Federer only won 10 Clay Titles because of playing in an era with the best claycourter ever, but still... Kuerten defeated Roger in RG and won 3 shiny French Open cups.

Still. I'm a great lover of Fed's clay-game and I still have hopes of a Rome title  :grind dance:

There is one person who is not on the top clay titles list because he won just 7 titles in the Open Era, but comes in at #5 in match win pct.
Can you guess who he is?

Yes, and I don't think anyone will catch him and of course Vilas, who won an eye-boggling 632 matches on clay.
