I'm not qualified to determine who has the best 1HBH, but the players I like to watch hit it are:
  • Gasquet
  • Almagro
  • Tommy (not Robredo)
  • Tommy (not Haas)
  • Rogi
  • Stan
  • Jo Willie On The Run

I can't even come up with 10. :(

The power Wawrinka generates on his backhand is awesome.

I personally am a huge fan of Youzhny, and Kohlschrieber has a nice backhand as well.

hm, this is a tough one. not sure if I can come with 10.
1. Federer
2..Gasquet
3. Wawrinka
4. Haas
5. Dimitrov
6. Djokovic  :rofl_2:

actually if you watch Nole's matches, he's been hitting that shot lately often when he is on the run, sliding, just to put the ball back in the court. it looks ugly but it works  :))

How could people say Fed's is better than Gasquet's? That's just ridiculous. Gasquet's has more power and is much more consistent. Fed's breaks down if there's too much spin on the ball.

1) Gasquet
2) Wawrinka
3) Almagro
4) Federer
5) Kohlschreiber

Don't really know the rest.

Rafa is the FIRST to qualify for WTF this year! :D

Richie's BH might look better but Fed's still looks good and it's more effective I'm afraid. did I just say this?

how many RG finals has roger been in again? and he won one of them too.

you don't get to be that good on clay with just a forehand.

I would say his single hander is the best in history. people know about his forehand so they try to stay away from it. so you know his backhand had to be pretty damn good

and who is gasquet again?

Great thread general Hercules. :H

Federer's single handed backhand is underrated by many because of the criticism he takes from it breaking down under the power of Rafa's topspin.

But it seriously has to be considered as one of, if not the best.  I believe his variety off that wing with quality along with his uncanny half volley and wrist flick ability is second to none.

Wawrinka gets my vote for most power with consistent accuracy.

The others mentioned are also very, very good.

Gasquet's backhand has the big loop and flair but notice how he never takes it early. More often than not he's on his back-foot or way back in the court - now how he builds angles and passing shots from there is just ridiculous and amazing in my opinion.  I don't want to use Fed's success as proof enough of his game but I think Fed's better at redirecting power off his backhand and can take time away from opponents much better than Gasquet can.

thanks general mc.

people stay away from roger`s forehand.

so we should be able to get an idea of how good roger`s backhand has to be for him to have won as much as he has.

and clay exposes them all. so we know there too that his backhand had to come through.

you don't make 100 RG finals by accident. or on a forehand alone.

Agreed.  Gasquet's court position is less risky, so he is probably able to return Nadal's shots to his backhand more consistently, but it is questionable as to how much damage he does.  Federer is often standing next to the baseline and returning shots on the rise, so he is liable to shank a few if he is off slightly.  But as they say, fortune often favors the brave.

consistency, variety, and match wins have to be there otherwise what good is a good looking backhand.

it does not matter how you hit the ball as long as you are consistent and consistently winning.

OK, Alex is coming out of 'the closet'. I guess I like 'older guys with big noses'  :rofl_2:

but seriously guys. Fed, in his prime and even nowadays when he is on .... nobody comes close ... If you watch his older matches, oh boy, he can rip that BH and hit winners left and right ... the big thing was made out of Nadal being able to exploit it, so suddenly 'some' guys started talking how Fed's BH sucks. far away from the truth.  :)
