Why I'm picking Ferrer to reach his first major final
« on: June 04, 2013, 11:31:01 AM »
I'm picking Ferrer over Tsonga in the semis.

I'm not basing this on H2H or who is most rested or each players' history. An argument can be made that they are a complete wash on all 3 of those categories. My argument goes thusly...

The key to Tsonga's win over Fed today is that Roger gives Tsonga a target because he's an aggressive player. Against Ferrer, the quintessential defensive player, Tsonga has no chance to hit past like he could today. Likewise, Tsonga is the aggressive player. Ferrer will have a field day hitting versus a target. In this way, he will frustrates Jo then watch Jo quit before the end of the second set.

EDIT: I'd be remiss not to add that, because Ferrer will have time to pick targets, he, unlike Fed today, will get to Tsonga's weak wing, his very average BH.

What you say?

No way. If Ferrer manages to def. Tsonga that would be horrible. I like Ferrer as a person but hate his game style. too much pushing etc. Tsonga all the way  :cheer:.

ferru is 0-6 in the semis at the slams in his attempts to get into the finals.

he is also pushing 32.

if that is why you are picking ferru then you need to let us know what you are smoking. it must be good.

That's not an argument! That's preference. I'm not a fan AT ALL of defensive play! I want every match ever played in tennis to look like Wawrinka-Gasquet.

OK, that's only a tad bit better: he's 32 and 0-6 in semis.

Not sure what 32 has to do with Ferrer. Have you seen something no one else has seen: he's playing like an old man on his way out?

What makes you say that Ferrer's age will suddenly be an issue? What are you basing that on, because nothing about his performance indicates that its been a factor this year? In fact, he's playing the best tennis of his life now.

His record in semis, however, is valid = your argument is a tad bit better than Alex's = preference

agreed babbs:

ferru took home no less than 7 titles last year.

so he is playing the best tennis of his career.

beating a confident Tsonga for him now is still a tall order.

ferru almost always gets overpowered by the bigger guys this deep at slams.

Tsonga is probably going to be able to overpower him. I say this is going to be a 4 set match.

I cant see it going 5 sets.

ferru offers very little variety. this will allow Tsonga to settle into a decent rhythm off the ground.

and then if Tsonga is able to force him to hit a little bit short, it will make it easier to go after the ball and force the initiative.

Tsonga in 4.

I would be  for williamchung to weigh in. This is the type of thread Bill used to layout a masterpiece on tactics and strategy.

Unfortunately, he's lost all credibility in mine eyes since he started following Jerzy   :)~

yeah, I kinda jumped without reading your post completely . I hope Jo will over power Ferrer. However, Ferrer might be a more difficult opponent than Fed. Ferrer is leading h2h 2:1 and he won the only match they played on clay back in 2010.

I agree that Ferrer's style will frustrate Tsonga as it often does but Tsonga can definitely afford to be a bit more patient with Ferrer and play more passive aggressively like Del Potro does on clay. A bit more controlled and doesn't get into mindless ball bashing.

Tsonga is also the home crowd favourite so that will help him stay focused as the idea would be to win the match and make the final here for the first time.

Ferrer definitely has the edge over Tsonga on clay but Tsonga is coming off a very big and convincing win. I don't think he'll be overwhelmed as he's won' over Federer in GS before. That emotion has been dealt with already so he should remain fairly confident.

I really, really think Tsonga will be very keen on making another Major final whereas Ferrer may find himself a bit nervous, though he's been in semi-finals many times before, RG has always be a bigger deal for him.

Considering all that, I might want to give Tsonga a slight edge there. He will have to play very smart tennis however.

Thanks Alex. This new camera (purchased for Tennis because of peer pressure by you and monster, but mostly you!) is sweet, but the process is painstaking since I take about 5 pictures of something to get the exposure right, then I have to sift through those. In fact, I've only posted fewer than 30 to my FB page.

Things going for Tsonga: He is the more powerful player and that's a better matchup against Ferrer than being another grinder. And I want to say that the new partnerhip with Rasheed has brought some consistency/maturity in Tsonga's shot selection as well as mentality. He is relatively more grounded throughout his matches and able to sustain a relatively high level of play - as evidenced by his matches against Federer both today and at the AO - and I would credit his new coaching partnership for that. That'll be key if he has to overcome Ferrer, as Emma pointed it out, it's about controlled aggression and not all out killing the ball.

He'll have the crowd all for him - but he'll also have pressure on his side. Against Federer he might not have been the favourite and that might have let him swing a little more freely and enjoy the crowd and use the momentum. It'll be a little different against Ferrer where, now that he's past the Federer obstacle, he is expected to make the final. And let's just say that holding it together under pressure hasn't been on of the strong points for any of the ubertalented Frenchman.

I do agree with Bab's theory that Ferrer won't give Tsonga a target and if anything, grind down Tsonga's weaker wing over time, but I think it'll come down to how well Tsonga stays grounded mentally and stays patient with his tennis and take advantages of the opportunities he creates.
